Mole Poblano, Mexico's Saucy Splendor

9008632653?profile=original
If you’re a true fan of the complexities of Mexican cuisine (as in, beyond Taco Bell and “pass the Old El Paso”) I’m sure you’ve come across one of this country’s most sophisticated contributions to world cuisine, as well as its quintessential “special occasion” dish. There are a number of Mexican sauces referred to as moles (pronounced “MO-layss”), but the best known is mole poblano, a thick, rich, brown concoction that for my money is as tasty and complex as any fancy confection from the kitc

Custom Artisan Cereal: me & goji

Custom Artisan Cereal with reddish goji fruit

Cereal makes a terrific breakfast especially when it contains a tasty combination of grains, nuts and fruit. For foodies or those going organic, I found a custom artisanal cereal company with a fantastic product line-up: me and goji.

What's goji?  A Tibetan superfruit from the Himalayas  that's packed with dizzying amounts of nutrients and phytochemicals; a fruit with a mild, tangy taste that is slightly sweet and sour.

9008613273?profile=originalI was deeply chagrined to learn that Gray Line recently suspended its culinary walking tours in NYC but nevertheless wanted to give one of their bus tours a try. Among the cavalcade of numerous other double-decker buses plying NYC's streets, I was fortunate to experience a complimentary ride aboard Gray Line's Downtown Loop. A hop-on, hop-off circuit, I caught the bus at its Times Square stop and luckily was able to climb up to the rooftop deck for a birds eye view of all that the non-stop narra

Lavender Madeleines Signal Hope in Humanity

9008605657?profile=originalNothing quite exudes sensations of spring on the palate like the lavender madeleines I discovered in the bakery café at The Kitchen. These treats are one of many that catch my eye in this gem of an eatery located in one of Hartford Connecticut’s most challenged neighborhoods.

About the size of lady finger and very springy to the bite, these melt-in-your-mouth morsels are coated in a light glaze of vanilla frosting embedded with lavender. The herbal essence didn’t overpower the cookie sweetness so

Texas Eat 'Em: BBQ in San Antonio, Texas

9008603670?profile=originalThe definition of barbeque has nearly as many meanings as sauces. First, you can attend an event or outdoor party, which, in Texas is usually held on a ranch. The act of barbecuing is the process of preparing food with smoke, low temperatures and long periods of time. Don't be confused by the backyard griller who claims to barbeque, but simply heats food outdoors, often over a gas source. And, don't try to find the best recipe as everyone claims their method holds prize winning secrets.

So it was Dominican night at La Hispaniola Restaurant, an on site restaurant in Punta Cana's Bavaro Princess Resort. The court yard outside was bustling with artisan craftspeople. A glass artist trained a precision torch on delicate tubes twisting and blowing them to create exquisite ornamental palm trees, and other decorative objects. Wood carvers spread out their inventive wares and classic Dominican cigars were being hand rolled from scratch right on a table using the most moist wrapper leaf

Red Velvet Cupcakes - The "Now" Holiday Treat

9008584501?profile=originalRed Velvet cupcakes seem to be popping up everywhere, so I just had to make a batch. And...I humbly confess, they're darn good!

Below is the recipe I used, however, I think I should have made fewer

cupcakes as mine did not rise to the top. Did I overbeat or was there

not enough batter for 30 cupcakes??? Who knows. I used the larger silver stand alone cupcake holders.

I also used less food coloring, just because the entire bottle seemed like overkill.

Nonetheless, the resulting cupcakes tasted g

One of the great joys of authentic travel is getting to know local people in the area you're visiting.

I've lived in New Zealand and watched tourists rush around the country visiting the same sights that every other overseas visitor is seeing (the places where big buses are stacked cheek-to-jowl in the parking lot).

These experiences don't allow time to meet real New Zealanders, savor a great Kiwi Savignon Blanc, and stand back and absorb the natural beauty of this amazing country.

Hey kids, believe it or not, there was spam long before the Internet! And now these leaner times have, shall we say, enhanced the appreciation of many for the canned processed pig known as capital-s Spam, churned out by the Hormel company in Austin, Minnesota since 1937 (though in many places the enthusiasm never really went away -- especially in the Asia/Pacific part of the world, where since the 1940's it's even earned an enduring place in local cuisines of places like South Korea, the Philipp
