Lincoln Highway display at the Joliet Historical Museum

If you live anywhere along the Lincoln Highway  you probably are aware that this year marks its 100th anniversary. It was the first paved coast to coast highway, an idea conceived by a man named Carl G. Fisher, an automobile and racing enthusiast who built the Indianapolis Speedway.

It had been a year since our last vacation. My mother’s condition had worsened ever since she began her stay in a long term healthcare facility.

My father who was home at the time of her fall said it happened quickly. She was in the shower and he heard a bang. He rushed in to find her lying on her side. She had broken her hip and that was the beginning of the end.

It’s scary how fast the tables turn. One day your parents are autonomous and doing their regular activities; going for walks, out fo

9296576685?profile=originalSometimes when you watch a lousy movie, the only compliments you can muster are about the scenery. For many people this was the case with the 2010 remake of Clash of the Titans, widely criticized for the quality of the 3-D graphics as well as the dubious plot. In fact, the landscapes of the Canary Islands were the only feature of the film to have emerged with credit. Even the actors spoke very highly of their own surprise in discovering the natural diversity and dramatic views across Gran Canari

Santa Fe: A Fusion of Cultures

9008645081?profile=originalMost people think New Mexico is called the “Land of Enchantment” because of its breathtaking scenery. I was most enchanted, however, by the state’s unique heritage and culture. Many people in the state retain their Native American culture while others still honor their Spanish or pioneer roots.

And no wonder -- New Mexico is relatively a newcomer to statehood. It’s celebrating only its 100th anniversary as a state in 2012, but its Pueblo heritage dates back thousands of years. Santa Fe itself is

When Christopher Columbus and his merry band dropped anchor for the first time in the “New World” in 1492, they found the the Taínos and Arawaks of Hispaniola (now two-thirds occupied by the Dominican Republic) smoking some funny kinda  dried brown leaves. And the DR has been a tobacco producer ever since – yet for much of that time, for reasons of history and economics, cigarwise it’s been overshadowed by Cuba, turning out mostly fodder for cigarettes.

Many people outside of the tourism industry tend to think of tourism and travel as an ongoing never-ending party. Yet anyone who has ever worked in the world’s largest peacetime industry knows that travel and tourism professionals spend long hours at work and that travel and tourism works to a great extent like any other large corporation.  Just as in other businesses tourism and travel professionals need to deal with budgets, have to justify lost opportunities and must overcome the issue of spo

A huge advantage of being here in St. Lucia is the year round growing season”, says Allen Susser, Consulting Chef at Jade Mountain Resort. Kenya's Chalbi Desert

12346899076?profile=RESIZE_930x

At 370 meters (1,214 feet) above sea level, the Chalbi desert is located in northern Kenya, east of Lake Turkana, (otherwise called the Jade sea), the largest permanent desert lake in the world.  Chalbi in the local Gabbra language means "bare and salty." It is among the hottest and most regions in Kenya, a salty pan surrounded by volcano and lava flows. The nearest big town is around 15 hours away.

The Chalbi desert has a semi-arid climate. February is the warmest month in Chalbi, rising to ov

The 2013 Fiesta de San Fermín - better known to many as the Running of the Bulls - got underway today in Pamplona, Spain. When I arrived here in the summer of 2010, I remember thinking it was hard to believe that the quaint little city of only 300,000 people could play host to an additional 700,000 people and one of the craziest parties imaginable.

The changes throughout the city became rapid in the days leading up to the start of San Fermin. The fences, which lined the Bull Run seemed to spr

With Costa Rica’s most famous active volcano – Arenal – behaving quietly for the past three years, tourists to this Central American hotspot are looking elsewhere for exciting fireworks.

Arenal-Volcano-300x188.jpg?width=300There are actually six active volcanoes in Costa Rica, and another 61 that are dormant or extinct. For the past 50 years, Arenal was the country’s most active volcano; however, in 2010, the celebrated cone-shaped peak entered a “resting phase” – meaning that its daily and nightly fantastic eruptions have ceased f

First Day in Kenya's Masai Mara

We took off after a wonderful breakfast at the Lion Hill  lodge. The objective was to get to  Masai Mara National Park and the Sopa Lodge by 1:30 for lunch and the afternoon game drive.

By the way, if you ever go on safari in Kenya or Tanzania, I can recommend the Sopa chain without hesitation, and no, they are not paying me to say this.
