Poas Volcano National Park, Costa Rica

In Costa Rica you can find many national parks and protected areas; being these, the main tourist highlights of each area. The most visited tourist destinations in the country are very close or into a national park area, for example Manuel Antonio with its national park, Monteverde with the cloud forest reserve and Fortuna with the Arenal Volcano National park. As you can see, one of the main reasons for visiting Costa Rica is the contact with nature and biodiversity offered all over the country

TripAdvisor Hits 50 Million Mark. Last Hurrah?

The Champagne should have been popping in the Massachusetts offices of TripAdvisor when it was announced that the review giant just became the first stand-alone travel site to top 50 million unique visitors a month.

Using data from Comscore, TripAdvisor reported that the big event happened July 2011 when traffic was up 22% over same time last year.

This is clearly an impressive feat for an eleven year old company!

I can remember sitting in their crampe

Hoi An, Vietnam - Part 2 (The Photo Tour)

Ever since I bought my new Nikon I hve been yearning to learn how to use it better than I do. If you know what the acronym RTFM means, it barely applies in this case. The camera has more features than I can find time to use while travelling. I always find myself trailing my wife and our guide by 50 steps while I try to frame a decent shot. She gets the low down on where we are and then I try to catch up. Consequently I leave the camera on the auto setting most of the time, which defeats the arti

Why is Munich's famous Oktoberfest called Oktoberfest if it's mostly in September?

The first Oktoberfest was held in 1810 to honor the Bavarian Crown Prince Ludwig's marriage to Princess Therese von Sachsen-Hildburghausen. The festivities began on October 12, 1810 and ended after five days with a horse race. During the years, the celebrations were repeated and, later, the festival was extended and moved forward into September, for better chances of good weather. September nights are warmer and vi

Maine-Nick-Acadia-Sunrise3.jpg

Waking up at 5 am on a Saturday morning is not my idea of a fun way to begin my weekend. However, being in Bar Harbor, Maine, gateway to Acadia National Park and home to Cadillac Mountain, Told by more than one local, "You just have to get out of bed at 4 a.m. and hike up to Mount Cadillac to see America's First Sunrise," so how could I refuse America's First Sunrise. It would rude wouldn't it.  I did not hike up to the summitt of Mount Cadillac. I let Japanese rental car engineering take me to

My Dinner With Paul (Bocuse)

9008643463?profile=originalRecently I came across a slightly dated item about master chef Paul Bocuse; seems this past spring, the Culinary Institute of America declared the Lion of Lyon "Chef of the Century" as part of its annual Augie Awards. No argument from me -- and it got me to reminiscing fondly about my visit three years ago to Monsieur Paul's flagship outside Lyon, L'Auberge du Pont de Collonges.

It was a sunny spring day, and after a lovely, leafy taxi ride up the Saône River, my lyonnaise companion Guillemette

Britto brilla en altamar

9008653270?profile=original

Wolves in New Jersey

9008654090?profile=originalWolves aren’t native to New Jersey, USA but if you know where to look, you are guaranteed a glimpse into their behaviour.

Best seen in the winter, when their coats are thick and full, the wolves present themselves as king of the canines. To observe these animals close-up, you’ll have to follow a winding mountain road up a short distance from I-94.

Look for the camp ground and a burly man with a big bushy white beard, looking much like a wild wolf himself. You can tell he has spent countless yea

Danang and the Marble Mountain, Vietnam

This will be a short post because we briefly passed through Danang on our way to Hoi An. Hoi An will be a very long post, because we spent 4 days there enjoying a marvelous little tourist trap.

We were driven from Hue to Hoi An over some mountainous roads, but mostly along the beaches. Danang  just happens to be along the way.

We made a couple of stops before Danang. This was a view of a major oyster farm. Cultured pearls are sold everywhere in Vietnam. They of course come in various qualities. The

I got behind on posting about some great places I've been, and one that my friend Cara Bertoia went to. I asked her to write about it on my blog back in July. So now, I'm going to post about those three wonderful spots here. One is a an Italian joint in NYC, another is a great seafood restaurant in Houston, and Cara's is about the town of San Pedro in California. Enjoy! (Or go to SearchingForSincerity.com)

Government Investigates Fake TripAdvisor Reviews

A few weeks back we reported on the stink being raised by the discovery that hotels were bribing their guests with discounts and free room stays if they wrote positive reviews about a property.

We noted the corrupt or compromised reviews seemed most prevalent  in UK, and quoted TripAdvisor's UK spokesperson as being rigorously opposed to the practice.

Now we read in the usually reliable industry site, hotel marketing.com that the UK's Advertising Sta

In Vietnam, the Historic Citadel of Hue

There are so many wonderful experiences in Vietnam as a tourist these days that one could spend weeks there and never visit a war site. But I am a bit of a history buff so among many others, I was determined to visit the Citadel.

In January of 1966, President Johnson met with General Westmoreland, commander of American forces in Vietnam. Johnson asked “Wastemoreland” what the North Vietnamese would do if the wanted to truly win in South Vietnam. Westmoreland said quickly and simply “take Hue”. Th

The Importance of Travel

The other day, while we were watching our little girl twirl around the living room, James asked me if I could think of anything in life that provided as essential an experience as having a child. (Yes, we get quite philosophical at times ;) ) I thought about it, and the only other thing I could come up with was travel. Just as if you have never had a child, there is this whole realm of life that you just never experience if you never travel (which describes many, many people I have met over the

Traffic Alert: President Obama will visit San Diego as part of his swing through Southern California. In fact, he'll  be having lunch in La Jolla on September 26. That'sbound to cause a few delays - maybe even a road closure or two. If you'll be in town that day, you might want to avoid Mt. Soledad.

This peak provides a great panorama, but on that day, the cars carrying those guys who wear dark glasses and talk into their lapels might clog up the access.

The event - no, I wasn't invited either -

New York City's Street Fare

TURKEY BURGERS TOPPED THE LIST

Give the best ingredients to Yassir Raouli, founder of the Bistro Truck, and he’ll create a masterpiece . . . or, as was9008652666?profile=original the case early in August, five of them.

Raouli left its usual spot in the city one summer afternoon for an uptown corner in New York City to serve his creations to foodies, who thrive on street fare.  “This is what I do. This is my art,” said Moroccan-born Raouli, who swapped his usual Moroccan-Mediterranean menu and used Jennie-O all natural turke

Discovering the Czech Republic

No one should need an invitation to visit Prague and the wine districts of the Czech Republic.  You should go just because9008648459?profile=original it’s an am

Exploring Halong Bay, Vietnam

fleet.jpg?w=448&h=231

This post starts with a photo of the fleet of junks we toured on in Halong bay. This a very comfortable way to spend a couple of days. great food, nice rooms, and beautiful cruise.

kursts.jpg?w=448&h=336

The reason Halong Bay is a tourist attraction is the huge number of Kursts in the bay. They make for dramatic backgrounds to photos, even on a day like we had which was grey, not blue.

sampan.jpg?w=448&h=329

The bay is home to thousands of indigenous fishermen in their sampans.

Experiencing Hanoi, Vietnam

I am old enough to have sworn I would become a Toronto Blue Jays fan before I ever went to Vietnam.

Time tends to heal most wounds, Vietnam is an example of that. The country is now a Socialist Republic with a strong capitalist strain running through it like veins of gold in crystal. Before I go any further, I must tell you that not once did anyone show me any disrespect let alone hatred for being an American. I did get asked if I were a vet more than once, but politely. Many American vets have r
