9009159470?profile=original Spring break for my ninth-grade daughter Diz was scheduled for the middle of April.  Since we had such a fantabulous off-season getaway at the Maryland beach resort town of Ocean City in November ‘16, a return trip during the week long spring vacation off was a no-brainer - so in February, I researched our options. We wanted to do our own cooking, so having a kitchen in our room was top priority.  We also wanted to find a hotel that had an authentic O.C.  feel, and preferably some history as we

This time of year, from October through December, Great Green Macaws (Ara ambiguus) return to the Maquenque National Wildlife Refuge in northern Costa Rica from the Indio Maiz Biological Reserve in Nicaragua. Following their main food source of mountain almond tree fruits that are now in season, the Macaws return to this vital habitat of rainforest and wetlands in Costa Rica.

Grand houses always also tell grand stories. In this case, it is a story of physical pain and a way to overcome it: The 2nd Earl of Dunraven, a man full of energy and used to spending a lot of time enjoying the chase of the hunt, was laid low with severe gout. Adare Manor had been built in the early years of the 19th century, but when the earl was diagnosed an illness that kept him housebound and in pain (not even aspirin was invented at that time!), his clever wife, Lady Caroline, suggested th

Although only a 15-minute drive north of Long Island's chichi Hamptons, Baron’s Cove in Sag Harbor feels miles away from the full-court press of high society's playground of the rich and famous.

Sag Harbor's rich heritage as a whaling port and later in manufacturing, most visible in the elaborate brick Watchcase Factory now converted into loft-style town homes, shape the village's vibrant walkable downtown and reflect the community surrounding it.

Boston's Seaport District is close to iconic downtown Boston attractions like Faneuil Hall and Boston Commons, yet off the beaten path enough to not be on the radar of tourists. It takes a little extra effort to walk over the Seaport Boulevard Bridge and head to the piers packed with boat tours and restaurants.

Located in South Boston or Southie as locals affectionately refer to it, the Seaport District has long been a trade port for Atlantic seafood trawlers. It's no accident that Legal Seafo

5 Weekend Getaways from Hanoi

9009148500?profile=original

Writing as an expat, we all love the hustle and bustle of Hanoi, but occasionally we yearn for a little bit of peace and quiet. Not to mention this time of year it’s a bit…. bleak, isn’t it? So instead of heading down to the local beer hơi this weekend, why not head somewhere quiet outside the city to see what Vietnam has to offer outside of Sa Pa and Ha Long Bay? Here are my five favorite spots that are close enough to get to this weekend for a day or two:

Hilton Showcases Brooklyn's Rich History

HiltonBrooklynExterior.jpg?width=1000

Recently opened at the corner of Smith and Schermerhorn Streets straddling downtown and the Boerum Hill neighborhood, Hilton Brooklyn is the first full-service hotel of its caliber to open here. Situated in a former two-block-long rope onetime factory owned by industrialist Peter Schermerhorn supplying Brooklyn’s shipbuilding industry during the 19th century, Hilton Brooklyn occupies the first six floors of what is now a 19-story commercial, retail and condominium mixed-use redevelopment.

Two Terrific Hotels of Naples, Italy

9009141672?profile=original

We are sitting with concierge Franco Milano on an evening in the beautiful, classic lounge of Naples' grand, waterfront Hotel Excelsior (Via Partenope 48). Cream-colored Roman shades have been lowered over the French doors and windows that line the room of this historic property. Soft light from antique Murano chandeliers spills over tall glass vases filled with white and fuchsia orchids. We're drinking Prosecco, the slightly effervescent white wine, while the elegant Franco, dressed in a dark

Take a right from Times Square's Father Duffy Square down West 47th Street for a short stroll and to your right, an early-20th-century hotel completely transformed into a four-star boutique hotel rises nine stories above the surrounding chaos. It's clear that father-and-son co-founders Hank and Brandon Freid took their 2010 creation of Sanctuary Hotel NYC, a luxury Buddhist-themed retreat, as a challenge and ultimate statement of creating the impossible here.

The Lady by the Sea: San Diego's Hotel Coronado

9009127484?profile=original

The Hotel Del Coronado on Coronado Island, CA, opened its doors in February, 1888. It is known as the second largest wooden structure in the United States and it was at that time the largest resort hotel in the world. The Victorian resort has been listed as one of the Grand Old Hotels in our country. It showcases a beautiful beachfront with a storybook history. It came of age during the “Gilded Era” when America’s rich traveled from resort to resort with servants in tow. Guests used to stay for

Is Executive Club level worth it? It depends. The first thing to do if you are considering it is to join the hotel’s customer loyalty program.  There are certain benefits such as free internet, preferred check-in, late check-out and often “member-only” rates.  One of the very best Executive Club Levels I have had the pleasure to enjoyed have been at the Pan Pacific’s Pacific Club and Park Royal’s Orchid Club. Their Executive Club level is well worth it extra cost to upgrade.

Situated in the heart of historic Port Jefferson Village on the waterfront right next to the Bridgeport/Port Jefferson ferry dock, Danfords Hotel & Marina blends modern luxury with a rich local history. The site of this luxury resort dates all the way back to 1870 when it housed a blacksmith shop, boxing emporium, social club, ice cream parlor, painter’s studio, and gift shop before the Hurricane of 1938 demolished most of it including the original foundation.

It was the first week of November, and even though summer had officially ended only two months prior, the fam (my wife Sue and my daughter Diz) and I decided that we needed a break.

The transition from the end of August into the beginning of September was intense:  Diz started high school and had a hectic soccer practice/game schedule, I got rolling on a massive consulting project that had me crunching through the weekends, our son entered his freshman year at college, Diz and I spackled/painted

Fun River Trips in Northern Costa Rica

9296587680?profile=originalA trip down one of Costa Rica’s rivers, either by raft, canoe, kayak or small boat, is an excellent way to see some of the country’s extraordinary wildlife. The rivers in Costa Rica are as diverse as the terrain through which they flow.

Trees that line most river banks may hold troops of monkeys, lounging iguanas and boas, and birds such as egrets, herons, ibis, ospreys, and colorful kingfishers. Crocodiles and caimans like to sun themselves on muddy banks, or may be cleverly disguised as a floa

Greenpoint, Brooklyn's northernmost neighborhood, started out as farmland that was eventually parceled out during the 19th Century to accommodate insatiable residential expansion away from New York City's core. There was also abundant commerce thanks to direct shipping access via the East River to New York Harbor the Atlantic Ocean beyond. Miles of factories and warehouses fueled the neighborhood's livelihood and character until the 1970's when the economy and manufacturing experienced the first

Each year during summer, thousands of visitors stream into this village of 900 full-time residents only to vanish from October through March. 1950s era motels still dominate and are lovingly patronized across generations of summer vacationers but for years, village offi
