Are Social Media Travel Sites a Bust?

9008791075?profile=originalThe header at Hotelmarketing  was pretty blunt: social media travel sites are screaming for attention-but users and suppliers are not impressed.

According to the latest PhoCusWright data, social media in general generates so little traffic to travel websites it makes anyone wonder if there really is a need for "dedicated social media sites for travel."

In an earlier post at New Media Travel,  we argued that travel marketers were in fact wasting their time on Facebook and Twitter.

Dolce & Gabanna, Dior, Chanel, Kenzo, Ferragamo, Versace, Valentino…

Y eso se nota en sus habitantes,

 9008680467?profile=original

Lantau Island is a world away from busy Hong Kong Island and Kowloon.  Lantau Island, located where the Pearl River flows into the South China Sea, is forested with the few high-rise buildings located along the coast.  It is home to Hong Kong International Airport, Disneyland, a 25-minute scenic cable car ride, Po Lin Monastery, the giant brass Tian Tan Buddha, and Tai O fishing village.  Guests at the SkyCity Marriott can explore the island on their own or to get the maximum benefit book a tou

Places Where Cider Houses Rule

pic-blog-post-cider-destinations-spain-cider-museum-escanciadores.jpg

It's autumn again in the northern hemisphere, and in a few key regions of a few key countries that means apples and cider, both “hard” (mildly alcoholic) and not. While pomaceous potions are brewed — in versions sweet, dry, and downright tart — in countries as varied as Argentina, Russia, and South Africa, in certain fetching parts of Europe and North America, cidre, sidra, and Apfelwein are an integral part of the life and culture. Any one of them would make a juicy getaway ind

Being a native of America’s favorite city of San Francisco, we are blessed with world class restaurants, museums, theatre, winning sports teams, a tolerant city, in a mild climate where outdoor activities are possible year long.

In the summer of 2013, I was able to witness the grand dame of yacht racing, the America’s Cup. San Francisco played host to some of the most skilled sailors and yachtsmen in the world. A sailing regatta like no other in a world class city, like no other. From July 7 to S

Five Reasons to Visit Vietnam

Written by Ellie

Having spent some time travelling in Thailand, I’m eager to visit more of south-east Asia, and visiting Vietnam is next on my list!

After researching the country and jealously listening to recommendations given by other travellers, I’ve come up with a list of my top reasons why I want to travel to Vietnam.

1. Delicious Food

Despite the huge focus on other Asian cuisines such as Thai, Chinese and Indian food, I’ve heard great things about Vietnamese food and some of the dishes sound

9008785471?profile=original“Female Eggs For Sale” may not be a sign you’ll see any time soon, but for all intents and purposes that’s what the global market for harvesting and selling women’s eggs is all about.

The in vitro fertilization market is a billion dollar industry that touches almost every country in the world. It touches the wealthy neighborhoods of London and reaches  into the Americas, Asia and the IVF capital of the world, Cyprus, which has more fertility clinics than any other country in the world, and attr

One of the most popular day tours from San Jose, Costa Rica, is the charming artisan town of Sarchi.

Sarchi-painted-oxcart-souvenirs-300x224.jpg?width=300Called the “cradle of Costa Rican handicrafts,” both international tourists and locals alike visit Sarchi for its more than 200 stores and small family-operated woodworking and leather workshops. It is a perfect Central Valley day tour to combine with the Poás Volcano, a coffee tour, or the Juan Castro Blanco National Park. Sarchi is also an excellent stop on the way to Volcano Arenal.

Minutes from the City:  the Mountain Awaits

The mountains east of San Diego are oak and apple country, with century old apple trees.

The country leading up to Julian, the former gold mining town from the 1860’s now home to apple orchards, wineries, gourmet dining, and shopping, is the dry rolling hills also seen in Paso Robles and Andalucía, Spain.  Just over an hour east of San Diego, the area is near Mt. Palomar, offering all four seasons to the Southern California traveler.  Cattle graze the

Hiking Cape Verde's Fogo Island

Isla_do_fogo.jpg?width=640

Fogo island
is the highest of all of the islands in the Cape Verde archipelago. The “island-volcano” is a gigantic volcanic cone that rises from the water, and is ideal for hiking. The landscape is spectacular due to its high altitude, and it has a lovely crater of 8km in diameter with steep walls. Half of the crater collapsed in favor of a younger volcano, which, with its perfectly proportioned black cone, is the highest point on the archipelago (its peak at 2,829m). You can climb it with a gui

Avgas Gorge, Cyprus

9008790463?profile=originalAvgas Gorge, on the western coast of Cyprus, is a magnificent fissure in the limestone cliffs. It lies in an unfrequented part of the island where tourists rarely went.

At the time of my first visit, I lived in Yorkshire. So, my first sight invited comparison with the limestone country of the Pennines. But, after the first section of the gorge, guarded by a cold, dark gap of only about 10 feet between 300-foot high cliffs, it opened out into an almost tropical treescape.

Is Tourism Good for the Environment?

Although it is no longer a rarely to find on a hotel bed a sign asking the guest to reuse his/her towel or to accept having sheets changed once every three days rather than once a day, many people still wonder if tourism is an environmentally friendly industry. Due to past mistakes the public often is cynical about tourism and it is not unusual to hear people wondering out loud if the desire to change sheets once every three days is more about saving the hotel money then about saving the envi

Best Caribbean Shopping Off the Beaten Path

pic-blog-post-caribbean-shopping-androsia.gif?profile=RESIZE_930xWhy in the world should you settle for all those cheesy malls and resort gift shops, the cruise-terminal complexes and hypercommercialized downtowns clogged with cookie-cutter perfume, watch, and T-shirt shops? If you know where to look, it’s still possible to find unique local products, atmosphere, or both. There are of course various straw markets and crafts centers on various islands, of course, but here are just a few of the other favorites I’ve come across in my years covering the Caribbean

For too many folks, Caribbean shopping in the 21st century seems to be all about duty-free malls, Rolex and Seiko shops, cheesy T-shirts, and made-in-China trinkets. Good thing there are still plenty of distinctive options where local flair and products can still be found —if you know how to smoke ‘em out. Following up on last week's Part 1, here’s my hand-picked round-up of seven more islands’ worth of goodies, from vanilla rum in St. Barts to conch pearls in Turks and Caico
