Corals & colorful tropical fish in Cahuita National Park, Costa RicaThe mention of coral reefs usually brings to mind crystal-clear, warm tropical waters, bright colorful fish and coral … maybe even the movie, "Nemo." Coral reefs form such vast, diverse ecosystems that they are commonly called the "rainforests of the oceans."

Like the rainforests on land, coral reefs are extremely threatened by humans' actions and climate change. Since the late 1970s, coral reefs across the world have been dying at an unprecedented rate, and it only seems to be getting worse, acc

One of my favourite places visited on my recent trip to South Africa was Grootbos Nature Reserve.

I was expecting a very rustic lodge type property with basic service and how I was wrong! Grootbos is set within a 23 hectare Milkwood forest and it is stunning. It was originally a farm with some decrepit outbuildings subsequently bought by a Capetonian for a ‘project’ in the 90s and it has grown since then.

The first thing you notice is its very modern building hidden within the thick forest and the

Certainly
Cuba has no shortage of charming Spanish colonial and early post-colonial architecture, from Pinar del Ríoout west to Santiago in the east. But for me the place that most makes me feel like I’ve actually stepped into the past of a century or more ago is Trinidad (Spanish for “trinity”), an almost ridiculously photogenic UNESCO World Heritage Site which in 2014 will commemorate its 500th anniversary.  In the province of Sancti Spiritus, on the south coast of the island’s midsection, i

Costa Rica super woods coming soon?

My front door is starting to stick. The kitchen cupboards under the sink now won't close, and my bedroom door is suddenly dragging across the floor tile. Is my house in need of repair? No, it's just rainy season in Costa Rica.

Wood in Costa Rica is greatly affected by rain and humidityIn the tropics, water and humidity play a major role in daily life. For us in Costa Rica, rain affects everything from drinking water supply to growing food, maintaining our forests and vegetation, and our electricity generated by hydroelectric power. Not quite so obvious,

Tropical forests cover 15% of the globe's surface and capture 25% of the carbon present in the atmosphere. These healthy forests play a critical role in curbing climate change. They "breathe" CO2 from the atmosphere and store it in trees and soil; in fact, roughly half of the world's terrestrial carbon is stored in forests, according to the international organization Conservation International.

Exploring Berlin Like a Local

Berlin-Germany.jpg On my second trip to Berlin, I wanted anything but the typical tourist experience. I had hoped, without spending hours researching, to explore Germany’s capital city like an insider.
As we walked to the first restaurant of the evening, we saw many points of interest along the way, including the gothic towers of the Oberbaum Bridge, the Berlin Wall East Side Gallery and a trendy electro club, Watergate, which offers views of the river.

Our first stop, the riverside Riogrande restaurant, was loc

A spectacle to behold, anyone who has experienced it would cherish the memories and would like to witness the same over and over again. There is this ''magic'' attraction which the Mara is synonymous with especially during migration time!

Though the migration is a full cycle process, starting from Tanzania and onto Kenya and back again to Tanzania, its the Kenyan side which attracts hundreds of visitors, year in year out. May be its because of the river crossing? or the fact that Mara is smaller

In 2002 the movie Cidade de Deus (City of God) brought to the eyes of many a picture of Brazil that was uncompromising but gave a glimpse of life inside one of Brazil’s many favelas. Telling the story of an ordinary young man and his struggle to survive in a rough, tough world, the movie won over 50 awards and received four Oscar nominations. But how does the drug-fueled gun-toting world of the movie compare with the reality of life within the favelas in Brazil?

Flying with a wheelchair is a lot like playing the tables at Vegas. You throw the dice and hope for the best. Sometimes, it really does feel like a craps shoot.
