Esconced on the lower Pacific ¨Emerald Coast¨ in the state of Oaxaca, the town of Puerto Escondido (which means ¨hidden port¨) was up until the 1960s barely a pinprick on the map, with dirt streets and just a handful of residents mostly devoted to fishing. Then in 1960 a coastal road reached the village, making it accessible to the outside world, and a village hall was built. Most consequentially for tourism, it was during that decade that surfers (pioneered by a group of Venezuelans

The thing that amazed me most standing on Playa Hermosa on a recent Saturday morning was not the beautiful deep blue and turquoise barrel waves, or the warm sunlight glinting off the black sand. It was the nearly complete absence of people.

There were maybe 30 surfers in the water, but so spread out that everyone got a wave to surf regularly. There was a young photographer alternating between shooting images of surfers and his model-looking girlfriend in her bikini. A lone jogger headed down th

At the time, in 2001, the northern California native had only been surfing about a year. She had tried surfing in her early 20s. It didn’t go well – pummeled by waves, bashed by the board, and leg muscles ripped. Then, in her early 30s, Eichne

When you visit Malpaís, on Costa Rica’s southern Nicoya Peninsula, be prepared to relax and unwind. This area of the country along the Pacific coast is so laid back that when you’re there it feels as if you’ve left the rest of the world off somewhere else, vaguely in the background. And that’s a good thing.

Besides being simply gorgeous – the beaches of Malpaís and Santa Teresa consistently are named the best beaches in Central America – Malpaís is a revered surf spot in Costa Rica. And the surf

While there may not be 70-foot point break waves like in the movies, Costa Rica’s Caribbean coast still sports some of the top surf spots in the hemisphere.

For one thing, the town of Puerto Viejo is home to the most powerful wave in Costa Rica: “Salsa Brava”. The thick, Hawaiian-style wave builds in deep water and breaks over a shallow reef right in front of the funky Caribbean beach town. For advanced surfers only, Surfline notes: “Salsa Brava loosely translated means ‘angry sauce’, and if tha

If Costa Rica's professional surf scene had an A-team, it would look something like this: Carlos Muñoz, Jair Pérez, Noe Mar McGonagle, Gilbert Brown, Anthony Fillingim, Luis Vindas, Leilani McGonagle, Lisbeth Vindas, and Nataly Bernold. The nine top surfers seem to shuffle places between being national champions and taking the top five slots at any given competition, with the odd interloper upsetting the order.
