Officially the Republic of China, this island with a population of around 24 million – just a bit larger than the state of Maryland and just under half the size of Scotland – has been in the news lately both thanks to its controversial January 13 presidential elections and to its perennial potential (and especially in the context of other current crises in Ukraine and Gaza) as a world flashpoint due to mainland China´s obsession with eventually and forcibly annexing it. Taiwan is both o

The unwavering commitment to equality, justice, and nonviolent protest of one of the premier civil rights leaders of the 20th century had a profound impact on U.S. and even world history both during his lifetime and in the more than half century since. And the holiday established in his name, celebrated on January 15, is a chance to celebrate diversity, explore the richness of history, and uphold the principles that MLK Jr. devotedly upheld.
And these five spots across the country offer

My country´s capital famously boasts some of the world´s most legendary and inspiring tourist attractions, such as the Colosseum, the Roman Forum, the Spanish Steps, and Vatican City. But Rome is also overflowing with millennia worth of riches that get less attention from visitors intent on their “bucket lists”, and exploring these places off the usual tourist track can give you a deeper, more authentic, and more serene experience of the Eternal City – and by the way, avoid the cro

"Charm City" (population around 586,000), the state of Maryland´s biggest, hasn´t always has such a charming reputation in recent years, but urban renewal has made a huge difference, and crime is limited to neighborhoods well away from areas most visitors are interested in. Art lovers, history buffs, and foodies will have a field day in Baltimore´s museums, landmarks/historic sites, and a flourishing restaurant scene which ranges from seafooders specializing in the iconic local blue crabs, crab

4 Musts in Houston

With a population of 2.3 million - and nearly 7 million in the larger metro area - H-Town (as locals dub it) is the Lone Star State´s largest city (as well as with the fourth-largest in the United States), and one of its richest, especially due in no small part to the great Texas oil boom which began in the early 20th century. All that population and wealth also means a deep bench of top-notch - and increasingly divers - cultural and recreational options for visitors (not to mention s

Still one of the planet’s top destinations, this flashy vision in the USA's Nevada desert is of course world-famous for its world-class casinos, shopping, shows, dining, nightlife, and attractions. But most of us wouldn’t necessarily think of “Sin City” as a place for museum mavens and culture vultures. And yet, in my visits to Las Vegas I’ve come across some pretty impressive museums indeed, along both traditional and also definitely untraditional lines. Sadly, the Liberace Mu

Norway's beautiful capital is a major global hub, yet only around 20 percent of its extension is truly urbanized, so in addition to city streets it's possible to spend time in parks, woodlands, hills, and lakes. Oslo's major avenue, Karl Johans gate, is lined with pedestrian-friendly areas. Oslo's main pedestrian boulevard begins at Oslo Central Station on the waterfront and winds its way past several prominent tourist attractions, including the Royal Palace and National Theatre, as well as a

In Rome, the Parco Adriano Hadrian’s Mausoleum, more often referred to as the Castel Sant’Angelo, was once its tallest building, a towering cylindrical structure commissioned by Emperor Hadrian to serve both him and his family as their final resting place once they died.  However, over the course of time, the Castel Sant’Angelo was repurposed by the Popes as a prison and a fortress.

Sitting on the banks of the River Tiber and built between 123 and 139 AD, its design was based on the mausoleum of

Get the Most out of Rome’s Magnificent Colosseum

Even if you’ve never been to Rome, you will have heard of the Colosseum.  It is, without fail, the most important attraction in all of Italy.  And, for a good reason, the Colosseum not only highlights the majesty and romance of this most beautiful of Mediterranean cities, but the storied history of an entire nation.

Quick History

Located at the eastern end of the Roman Forum you will find the Colosseum.  The mammoth structure was commissioned by Emperor Vespasian of the Flavian dynasty between 70-

Founded on Florida's Gulf coast in 1888 - and, yes, named after the famed Russian city (on a whim of one of the city's founders, who actually flipped a coin to decide the matter with his co-founder) - "St. Pete" has fairly little in common with its larger Slavic namesake. But one major exception is that in both you could spend days on end exploring a wealth of fascinating museums. In addition to the classic Florida sun and nearby beaches that it's known for, the ever growing arts scene and art

Hidden in plain view among hundreds of classic cars is the 1907 Thomas Flyer, the winner of the first and only around-the-world auto race, the New-York-to-Paris Race of 1908.

9008892894?profile=originalWith my penchant for museums, I was enchanted to visit the Hunt Museum in Limerick. Has nothing to do with hunting but everything with one of the greatest private collections of art and antiques in Ireland, right up to the the 20th century.

John and Gertrude Hunt were antique dealers and art historians and started, well, collecting and keeping those items they most liked for themselves. This went on for a good long time and suddenly they had more than 2,000 items on their hands. The next proble

I'll say upfront, I'm horrified by the nightmare this country is installing in the Executive branch of our government, and wincing at the massive damage we're going to be taking over the next four (and hopefully only four) years. So it's all the more worth noting that given the outsize world influence of this country’s chief executive, travellers seeking insights into both U.S. and world history will find intriguing and often first-hand information at the librar
