With a history dating back to the Sumerians in the 3rd century BCE, this 9¼-square mile island is a 30- to 40-minute ferry ride from Kuwait City, and home to some ancient landmarks and ruins, as well as a tourist-oriente "heritage village." 

However, many of its buildings were destroyed or severely damaged during the 1990 invasion by Iraq under Saddam Hussein, and most of its 2,000 residents never returned. These days you can take a tour of the island that in addition to its historic sites includes its eerie bombed out landscape to see what the result of war looks like up close.
