Travel and tourism professionals can never forget that their profession is not only one that evokes high levels of emotions, but is often open to all sorts of liability cases that range from the frivolous to the extremely serious.  To add to the confusion, what may be legal in one place may be illegal or liable in another location and often visitors may not only sue in the location in which an incident occurred but also once they have returned home.  This month's Tourism Tidbits might be read in

Tropical Architecture in Costa Rica

Besides amazing looks, tropical architecture is all about working with the elements of nature to achieve thermal comfort in hot and humid climates. Tropical architecture, whether traditional, ultramodern or high-tech, uses passive design elements like sunshades, cavity walls, light shelves, overhangs, roof and wall insulation, and shading from large trees to block the intense tropical sun, according to Tropical Architecture articles. Tropical houses, especially those with Asian design, often hav

My Experience of BOSTON UNIVERSITY

Over the years I have read and watched about the metropolitan city of Boston, Massachusetts. The city is fast paced, effervescent, and dynamic. Boston offers a great deal of, what I call the good life, the facilities, the stable business structure, and a great hub for career oriented people. It would be in my best interest to be in an environment as challenging and conducive to learning as the atmosphere of Boston University. My knowledge about the campus is based on what I have learned from the

The People's Committee of the central province of Quang Binh has approved an experimental adventure tour of Son Doong Cave suggested by Howard Limbert, expert of the British Cave Research Association.

Limbert recommended that due to unexplored nature of cave, the trial tours, to be held twice a month, should consist of a group of only seven or eight visitors.

Son Doong Cave, found in Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park in 1991, is considered the largest cave in the world. It contains a large fast-flow

Adventure and family reunion in Vietnam

IT'S amazing what the Vietnamese transport on their bikes: fridges, furniture, dogs, cats, small children, chickens; we even spot a monkey.

We’re on our way from the airport into Ho Chi Minh City and hundreds of scooters and motorised pushbikes weighed down with all manner of things are weaving in and out of the taxi’s path.

My husband Stewart, daughter Isabel, seven, and I are visiting my recently retired father Patrick who lives 300 miles north east of the city in Nha Trang, where he was teachin

If you've ever eaten Anatolian, you know what a Turkish delight it is, and Istanbul (not Constantinople) is certainly jam-packed with places to shovel it in. But on Akbiyik Caddesi, a popular restaurant row in Sultanahmet near the Blue Mosque, Hagia Sophia, and Topkapi Palace, Dutch-born Cordon Bleu alumna Eveline Zoutendijk set out her shingle with a slightly more focused purpose than merely getting tourists fed.

Sure, at Cooking Alaturka you can certainly pull up a chair and feast on goodies

HIKING ADVENTURES ON CAT BA ISLAND

“Here’s the trail,” our guide said. He pointed up – at what appeared to be a sheer rock wall.

Most people come to Cát Bà Island as part of a two-day cruise on Halong Bay. They generally view the island as little more than a rest stop before the long drive back to Hanoi.

But there’s far more to Cát Bà than the port town. Staying at the Cát Bà Eco-Lodge, 13 kilometres inland, my friends and I got to explore an impressive landscape where there are seemingly more rice paddies than tourists.

FAVOURITE FOODS IN HO CHI MINH CITY

Ho Chi Minh City has an abundant cuisine with many delicious dishes made as well as on the side of the road as in a top-end restaurant.

Let’s see favourite foods in HCMC listed by One2Fly magazine:

Paradise and social responsibility – in recent years, Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) has become a buzzword in mainstream tourism all over the world. Recently in Puerto Rico I attended the Saborea (savor), a “culinary extravaganza.” The event is a series of tastings and parties that culminates at Escambron Beach, ocean side under enormous tents. One tent showcased tastings from island chefs and Puerto Rican rum. Yum! The other tent was set up as a food theatre where two chefs had 45 minutes to create their own signature dish that was then judged side by side by a panel. The chefs were either Food Network or Bravo TV stars, or stellar local ta

Hostel Boom Follows Social Media Model

by Hardie Karges and Kaleel Sakakeeny

Travelers probably already know that hostels can save  a bunch of bucks in super-expensive Europe.  But they can save a lot of money in Asia, too.  Or Mexico, And  some now rival boutique hotels for style and atmosphere.  They aren’t just for youth anymore, either.  They are not your parents' hostels!
Though still in their infancy in the US, hostels in fact are the hottest thing happening in budget travel and lodging.

These hostels are not the same as the t
