Murano Oriental Resort is cool. The luxe property combines the exotic and hip in a setting of high design. Hot meets cool in Palmeraie, a seemingly endless stretch of desert on the outskirts of Marrakech where palm trees (protected by the king) grow undisturbed — even in the middle of dirt-paved roads — and the wilderness extends to the foot of the majestic and eternally snow-covered Atlas Mountains.

Montenegro
is a small, charming country washed by the waters of the Adriatic Sea. With a mere 293 kilometers of coast, it is undoubtedly the jewel of the region of Dalmatia (shared with next-door Croatia). Montenegro boasts a natural wealth of warm beaches, forests, lakes with crystal clear water, rivers and magnificent mountains to be discovered on a weekend escape or a vacation.

A mountain range reaching an altitude of 1,500 m separates the coast from the interior. Not to be missed the deepest

Wales' Remarkable Pontcysyllte Aqueduct

If someone 2000 years ago had compiled a list of ‘Seven Wonders of the Modern World’, it’s pretty certain that it would have contained a few aqueducts. The Romans were pretty good at building these structures. They were used to convey water from where it was to where it was needed, and some of them are still standing. The Pont du Garde, at Arles, France and the Acueducto Romano in Segovia, Spain are the best-known examples which can still be seen.

When you're looking for a place to get away and enjoy a relaxing vacation, but you want somewhere different that isn't a typical tourist location, consider taking a trip to Bulgaria. Though not usually the first place that most would think about when planning a getaway, the country has many amazing sights to see and places to explore.

Whether you're interested in visiting an ancient monastery, a centuries old cathedral or a scenic sea garden, you will find plenty of excit

Bali: Paradise Buried

9008664886?profile=original

If Bali is on your bucket list, scratch it off. I’ll save you the long plane ride and the money to get there by telling you that the romantic, idyllic paradise you have in your mind about Bali has been buried under tourists, traffic and trash. Our introduction to Bali might have jaded us. I know it jaded my wife. The line at immigration was not long, but the clerks were very slow. Directly in front of us were two grungy euro looking trekkers with dreads. I fully expected them to get seriously sc

After arriving in the late afternoon and settling in at the Fairfield Inn & Suites by Marriott on Chincoteague Island for a weeklong August getaway, we were ready for an early dinner.  Our plan was to kick back at a nearby eatery that was a favorite of the locals, and had a loose vibe.  Fortunately, we didn’t need to travel far; a ten -second walk from our rooms was the front door of Chincoteague’s first and only waterfront hotel restaurant - The Jackspot.

These days over the skies of Frankfurt, it seems there are more planes than birds. Not surprising, given that its airport is a international hub that’s a hive of activity at all hours. Its skyline, too, speaks of thrusting commercial energy, opportunity, creativity, and wealth. Yet there are also more low-key, old-fashioned, cultural, even folkloric sides to Germany’s business capital, too, to delight the visitor.

The city was able to r

Coming out of the snowiest March in New England history, imagine what a pleasure it was to disembark from a plane on a morning that felt like the middle of June, swiftly exit a calm and orderly airport, and find a man named Jorge standing in the sunlight, waiting for you. He loads your bags into the trunk of a blue BMW, and off you go on a thrilling fifteen minute drive up and down the roads of a velvety green island with the glinting Atlantic to the so

29 of Mexico's Most Magnificent Beaches

Mexico beaches oneinchpunch shutterstock_183713843

This is quite a tough list to compile without letting it balloon to a cast of dozens. I have beached all over Mexico, and if I had to narrow it down to the true crème de la sand, I’d cite the following 29 in and around the country’s most popular resort areas (then stay tuned for a follow-up post on castaway beaches for when you really want to get as far as possible from the madding crowd!). And it goes without saying that many make tempting escapes from the chill this fall and winter!

The Bicycles of Burano

9009089496?profile=original

We’d been to see … or rather, been importunately dragged into … a glass factory on the Venetian island of Murano, to see the glass being made. Certainly, the demonstration was impressive, but we didn’t buy any. It was a bit on the expensive side, and we couldn’t be certain of getting it home in one piece.

From there, we went to visit the similarly-named island of Burano. That’s the island where the lace-manufacturing industry has its centre. The vaporetto (water-bus) for Burano sailed from the F

The Classic Mekong Redefined

9296616074?profile=original

There can be no tapestry of river life as fascinating and varied as the River Mekong. Indeed there can be no more striking a cultural contrast as that between the bustling Vietnam delta and the tranquility of Cambodia. Pandaw's Classic Mekong's cruise passes from the vibrant French colonial port of Saigon, through the vast delta so rich in human life and endeavor, to travel along the main channel into the rich countryside of Cambodia. After a full day in charming Phnom Penh the cruise proceeds t

Rotterdam a Dynamic Dutch Treat

Most of us understandably think of Dutch cities as steeped in picture-postcard canals, quaint bridges, and low slung, stepped-gable houses, à la Amsterdam and Delft But the Netherlands‘ second largest city (pop. 625,000) is a horse of a very different color – and just as appealing in its own way.

On the Maas River near the North Sea in South Holland, a half hour from Schiphol Airportby train and motorway, dynamic  Rotterdam is instead Europe’s largest port; this country’s only metropolis wi

Steeped in history and culture, and surrounded by picturesque forested islands, towering mountains, a distant volcano, and soaring eagles – Sitka is what most tourists imagine when they think of Alaska’s natural wonders.

Founded by Russian explorers in the 18th century, this town (once called New Archangel) is within easy view of Mt. Edgecombe, an extinct volcano that adds drama to an already rich and colorful landscape.

Welcome to Hue, Vietnam's Imperial City

Set on the banks of poetic Perfume River and backed by Ngu Binh Mountain, Hue is truly a “natural beauty icon” of Vietnam. The little city was once a capital, the seat of Nguyen Dynasty more than a century ago. Unfortunately, a large part of its majesty - royal palaces, elegant temples, formidable fortress and gateways - was destroyed by wars.

Despite its eventful and complicated history, Hue remains a peaceful and scenic city, rich in nature and culture. Just wander off a few blocks from the
