Exploring Madrid´s little known medieval (Muslim) legacy

David Paul Appell I've always had a fascinating for things medieval. Would never want to have actually lived back in the Middle Ages, mind you - perish the thought. But the architecture and atmosphere of the Romanesque and the Gothic have always captivated me. And while my adopted country provides more than enough to delight me on this front year after year, I've been enjoying my home town Madrid more for its marvelous architecture and monuments dating from the mid-16th century onward, when…

Flamenco: the soul of Spain?

Ask many people around the world what comes to mind when they think of Spain, and chances are flamenco will land near the top of the list. The sinuous moves; the rapid, hypnotic shoe tapping; the staccato hand-clapping; the mesmerising guitarwork; the plaintive singing - if you've never witnessed a performance in person, your first time in particular will stay with you forever. An art form and indeed a sensibility closely intertwined with the culture and traditions of Andalusia, flamenco grew…

Spain's wonderful (and sometimes wild) west: Extremadura

Mariaplr Hugging Spain's upper border with Portugal, the autonomous community of Extremadura, composed of the provinces of Cáceres and Badajoz, is well known to other Spaniards as a proud land of strong traditions; rich history; distinguished cuisine; and fascinating historic, architectural, and natural riches. In fact, in particular this is considered one of the country's under-the-radar eco-paradises, with extensive and dramatic valleys, plains, and natural parks that attract nature-lovers…

What not to miss in Barcelona

walkerssk/pixabay There's a good reason Spain's second largest city after Madrid is one of Europe's (indeed, the world's) most popular cities - famous and beloved for its art, architecture, culture, cuisine, and nightlife ever since hosting the 1992 Summer Olympic Games. It's also the capital of the region of Catalonia, one of Spain's nations along with Galicia and Euskadi (aka the Basque Country), with its own distinct language and culture. Well, there's a lot to unpack here, so let's…

  • And now comes the world's first kosher restaurant with a Michelin star, in the Eixample near Diagonal, and this article in the Times of Israel also discusses the city's recent campaigns targeting Jewish and Israeli visitors, called “Shalom Barcelona” and “Barcelona Connects Israel.” Oy! https://www.timesofisrael.com/hungry-for-jewish-tourism-barcelona-g...

  • Anyone seen the Mark Wahlberg movie "Uncharted" which came out at the beginning of this year? Silly but quite a ride (not surprising, since it was adapted from a video game) - but one of the things I especially liked about it was seeing locations in Barcelona - the Sagrada Familia, Montjuich, the Barri Gòtic, Santa Maria del Pi, and so forth! Here's the trailer: https://youtu.be/eHp3MbsCbMg
  • Several months ago, The Guardian published a great survey singling out 40 of Europe's top beaches, and since this is one of Spain's super-strong suits, it's not surprising that a half dozen of its strands made the list. But you may be surprised at a couple of the unexpected names and locations! https://www.theguardian.com/travel/2022/apr/30/40-best-beaches-in-e...

  • Interesting survey out a month ago from the travel insurance website InsureMyTrip.com ranking 66 cities worldwide in terms of safety for female solo travellers - and I was interested to see that Madrid came in at number one! https://www.insuremytrip.com/travel-advice/travel-inspiration/best-...
  • Those of us who live in Spain were riveted by the ongoing news of the volcano which was erupting in La Palma last September through December. And I was interested to see that there also seems to be a "silver lining" to the whole thing, as BBC Travel recently noted: https://www.bbc.com/travel/article/20220217-la-palma-where-a-volcan...

  • Living in Madrid now, I regularly read the Spain edition of the The Local (https://www.thelocal.es), an 18-year-old network of European sites in English which is a great source of local news and commentary - very helpful for expats like myself. Just the other day, for example, I came across this piece about eight amazing places to ski in Spain. And while they may not be on a par with the Alps or the Rockies, the Pyrenees up north and the Sierra Nevada down south, for example, provide some pretty terrific winter fun: https://feeds.thelocal.com/app/ios/article.php?id=eight-amazing-pla...
  • I will be with a colleague/photographer on assignment in Saville in early May, and am interested in contacting individuals who are connected with local boutique and upscale hotels (in town preferably, but also open to nearby areas with easy access to the city center)--such as P.R. reps, hotel managers, travel marketing companies and so on.  We are looking for three nights, and are also open to splitting up the stay between properties.

I will be doing two gastronomy stories focused on innovative Sherry-food pairings and Sherry-based cocktails for wine-focused publications, and one about Saville cuisine in general for a newsstand consumer magazine.
