Dracula, Frankenstein and other heroes of the horrors will be on hand, while spooks and spiders, ghouls and goblins will abound in haunted graveyards. The Litchfield Hills of Northwestern Connecticut will be filled with unique ways to celebrate Halloween throughout the month of October. Families can choose from fearsome to friendly, with many chances for younger children to don their costumes and parade in happy small town celebrations.

The Gnus of Mara/Serengeti Ecosystem

period.

Shai Hills in Ghana

I had a couple of free days in Accra recently while winding up my month in Ghana. I decided to visit the Shai Hills Resource Reserve for a change of pace. By tro-tro to Ashaiman and then another one got me to the Reserve in less than 2 hours, a distance of 33 miles. I had booked a room at the Shai Hills Resort, supposedly 300 m. down the road from the main entrance. Actually, it's more nearly 1 mile, which I walked instead of waiting for another tro-tro. Hot!
There are extensive jungley grounds a

In Portugal, Port Wine is King

If Vasco do Gama, Magellan and Henry the Navigator fortified themselves with Port, Portugal’s most famous product, it might have made their journeys less horrific.

But Port wasn’t created until the 17th century, and today it’s undergoing a renaissance.

This easy-going, southern European country produced navigational giants that dominated the sea routes of the world, and controlled colonies as diverse as Brazil and Angola.

But what it controls today is perhaps more precious. Accordi

Tips For Booking Your Holiday Travel

If there were ever any hard and fast rules for booking airfare, they seem to have “flown” out the window. Airfares change constantly, even by the minute. It can be frustrating trying to get that best rate, but these tips can help you pay less.

1. Book early. The sooner you can decide on your holiday travel plans, the better. If you wait too long, you run the risk of less availability and higher rates. The Air Transport Association reports Thanksgiving, and the winter holidays of Christmas, Hanukk

Today I headed south on Rt. 11. Through Kailua, past Captain Cook. We turned south on the South Point Rd. and drove the 12 miles to the end of land–”the southernmost point in the USA”. We watched and talked to the local fishermen, walked the cliffs and climbed the rocks out as far as we could go. Stunning, gorgeous. The one lane narrow rutted road, the rock walls across pastures, the cliffs, crashing waves and gray skies all bring England to mind–reminded me alot of Cornwall and Land’s End–not Q

A Vacation From (My Typical) Vacations

Guest Post By Kathryn Christensen.

hawaii.jpg

I am on the Big Island.

As we were walking on the beach yesterday, Scott (my son) said to me
“Mom, I don’t remember when we were last on a vacation like this.”
“What, with just us, not the whole gang? ” (I do have 7 children, 4 of whom are married, and 5 grandchildren– so we can have quite a crowd)
“No, I mean we usually go to the cabin or Seattle and then all you do is work. Now you are just on vacation!”

Such an insightful comment. As those of you who are fellow va

Back in the day, you'd stroll into a travel agency, get face-to-face advice, and leave with an armful of color brochures and a paper ticket. Then the Internet came along, but for a long time consumers were slow to warm up to paying online with a credit card. That's mostly history now: Most will happily divulge those 16 digits in return for the savings that online competition and the elimination of the travel agent middleman have brought about.

All well and good, for the most part, when it comes t

Of Twitter, Burgers and Hotels

I don't much like case studies. The ones that business school students labor through.

I prefer the kinds of quick case studies I get in Entrepreneur magazine.

In his “Talk of the Town” column in this month’s magazine small business “thought leader,” Chris Brogan, talks about Joe Sorge who runs AJ Bombers, a burger place in Milwaukee.

Sorge does with Twitter something close to what we reported Chicago and other cities are doing with Foursquare.

Costa Rica

In the spring of 2009 I headed to Costa Rica for a 8 day trip for my Capstone in my MBA program. A group of 3 students and our instructor were tasked with helping the tourism board on the eastern side of the country. Costa Rica is a cutlurally rich country with amazing weather, more animals than anywhere else in the world and locals who are so caring about each other and the planet.

We got to live like tourists and experience tours of pineapple plantation, a flower farm, a zip-line, whitewater ra

Luxor, Egypt

Travel Thursday: Luxor, Egypt

OCTOBER 7, 2010

Last week I talked about a few of the days we spent on the Red Sea in Egypt for some rest and relaxation. But being the go,go,go people that we are, we could only have some much rest and relaxation. From Hurghada we headed by police convey to Luxor.

We really did need a police convey to go from Hurghada to Luxor because of tourist threats. They don’t recommend that tourists drive the long dessert highway between Hurghada and Luxor so we hired a car and

THE HOTEL WHERE JANIS JOPLIN AND LEONARD COHEN SLEPT
(SORT OF) IS UP FOR SALE

by Ed Wetschler

Sid Vicious of the Sex Pistols was no rocket scientist, yet even he understood that Manhattan’s historic
Chelsea Hotel was both a good deal for a New York City hotel and a major hangout for artists, famous eccentrics, musicians, writers, and other celebrities. The musician’s appreciation of this most excellent combination was rather abruptly interrupted in 1978, when his girlfriend was stabbed to death

Hurghada, Egypt

Last week our Egypt trip started in Cairo, and then we headed to Hurghada on the Red Sea for rest and relaxation. We flew from Cairo to Hurghada and headed to our inclusive resort, the Sheraton Soma Bay.

Map of Egypt

This was our first time staying at an all inclusive and it was a much needed few days of nothing! We didn’t leave the resort at all and just enjoyed sun, sand, snorkeling and the food.

Sheraton Soma Bay Facade

We enjoyed snorkeling on a reef right off the dock, read a few books, and even got our traditional Thanksgiving.

Can photography interpret the future, can it provide Futurspectives? This is the underlying question that the Photography Festival of Rome, on display until October 24, will try to address. Bumpy ride, Maps and Legends, Unpublished-Unknown are the three main sections of the Festival, complemented by the work of Tod Papageorge on the city Rome, Giuliano Matteucci’s pictures of Africa, and a preview of “Mutations 3″, the new production by the European Month of Photography.
