In November 3, 2013, a total solar eclipse will pass over equatorial Gabon in Western Africa congo, Uganda, Kenya and finally Ethiopia. Lodwar in Kenya reports a very encouraging “percent of possible sunshine” of 74 percent, strong confirmation of a pronounced decline in cloudiness toward the eastern end of the eclipse track, though the value is so high as to invite a little suspicion which results to a very high resolution which makes it the best point to be during this time of event. There is

The Great Wall of China, as we know it today, starts near the Yellow Sea and ends at a watch tower overlooking the White River. Stretching four thousand miles through deserts, over mountains and into the country’s northern heartland, it is a manmade wonder of the world.

Because so many people died in its making, the Chinese have called their wall “the longest cemetery in the world.” Not a single accurate map of the entire wall exists.

The Great Wall isn’t the only wall in China. There are so many

Fresh charm, old world hospitality

Tay Giang District in the central province of Quang Nam can be said to be a new tourism find in Vietnam.

But it has the added attraction of not being spoilt by tourism and we can only hope it stays that way.

Located on the west side of the Truong Son Range at a height of more than 1,300 meters, the district alluringly presents its vast terrace fields and green mountains draped in gently swaying fog.

One early morning, as we left Tay Giang Town for the district, the fog was more airy and the scene m

Hotel nacional de Cuba

It all started as a bit of an accident. A big fan of Cuban music, American guitarist Ry Cooder had been invited to Cuba to work on a collaboration with local musicians and two well-known musical stars from Mali. When the Africans were denied entry visas to Cuba, Cooder set about creating his Plan B: A recording of Cuban son music with local musicians.

A Star is Born

The resulting album, recorded in only six days, included the title track Buena Vista Social Club and was released to critical acclaim

Top Chefs Promote Local Cuisine at Cayman Cookout

caymancookoutplate-300x225.jpg?width=300

The Caribbean is filled with fresh from-the-tree & garden ingredients along with daily just-caught fish right off shore. Up until just 5 years ago, many Cayman Island restaurants simply had key ingredients shipped in from elsewhere instead. On the surface, this may seem like lunacy. Why not simply harvest what's in your backyard rather than have it shipped from around the globe? The answer is twofold. First, more obscure island produce couldn't be farmed and sold profitably. As a result, island

Primero, Segundo, Tercero, Cuarto, Quinto, and… and… Sixto, ahhhh…  And the sixth time was a charm (not that the first five weren’t), and Sixto Diaz (Jesus) Rodriguez came into this world on July 10, 1942, the sixth son of Mexican immigrants working in war-time Detroit, more than three years before atomic bombs would fall on Japan and twenty-five years before rockets would land men on the moon.  No one would have predicted that his life would have been easy, but no one would have predicted that

Could there be anywhere more romantic to spend Valentine’s Day with your dream girl?

Okay Paris and Florence were out of my budget, but Lam Dong’s flower heaven that is Dalat cannot be bettered in this part of the world.

All ladies love flowers even if they grumble how much you pay for them, when chocolates would do. My better half and I chanced upon the flower gardens perchance on that special day, in fact we both forgot the big day until a fellow tourist informed us.

I suppose heading to Cong Vi

Sarapiquí is one of my favorite places in Costa Rica.

Rust red-orange earth meets up with jade green water of the Sarapiqui River, next to fluorescent green grass and darker emerald-green, thick rainforest. Jewel-toned birds and butterflies swoop here and there, and this time of year, the cicadas bring a tumultuous cacophony to the sunshine. Colors seem more vibrant here. Maybe it’s the moisture in the sun-soaked air. Maybe it’s the abundance of nature.

On Flashback Fridays I reflect back on some of my past travels and travel mishaps before I started this blog: Follow on Twitter at #FlashbackFri

A few years ago I traveled to Ecuador to what would be my first ever encounter with the mighty Amazon Rainforest. Most of you who know me know that I love jungles. It all started with the Jungle Book as a toddler, then Tarzan at primary school, Indiana Jones at middle school, and then I started reading stories about El Dorado during my Spanish classes
