When it comes to discuss about famous mountain hiking destinations, El Caminito del Rey (English: The King’s pathway) comes into our mind as one of the most adventurous destinations of the world. This is a famous walkway of Spain, full of danger and which have its way in between a narrow mountain pass, El chorro. El chorro is situated very much close to the Mediterranean Sea.

Location

El Caminito del Rey or in short Camino del Rey is located in Spain near Alora, a village near to the famous city of Spain, Malaga.

Historical references

In the year 1901 the workers of the hydroelectric power plants at Chorro falls and Gaitanejo Falls felt the need of a walkway to communicate between the falls. And on that year the construction work of the walkway began. The walkway was initially built up to communicate with the falls, supply materials, inspect and maintain the channel properly.

But in the year 1921, when King Alfonso xiii crossed the walkway to inaugurate the dam Conde del Guadalhorce, this walkway earned huge popularity and began to known as El Caminito del Rey or, in English: The King’s pathway.

About El Caminito del Rey

This narrow pathway is only 3 feet wide, which means, if you have lacking of concentrations, you will fall into the river, 700 feet below the walkway. Above all it is not at all a wise decision to put faith upon a construction, built more than a century ago for transportation. But still now many people have the passion, zeal to experience an adventurous journey in this pathway. This walkway serves as time-saving way to Makinodromo, a famous climbing sector of El Chorro, Spain. Since the walkway serves as a shortcut today as it was one hundred years ago, people risk their lives on a daily basis despite its illegal status.
