When in Hong Kong, learn about something very Chinese. The Hong Kong Tourism Board offers a kaleidoscope of free cultural programs to help tourist learn about local culture, and one of them is a Cantonese opera appreciation class. This is an old and highly respected art form that blends Chinese legend, music and drama into an exciting performance style, rich in symbolic meaning. The class guides people through the Hong Kong Heritage Museum’s Cantonese opera Heritage Hall and its numerous displays so you can better develop a better understanding of this unique art form. Costuming is important in understanding what is taking place. Only the royal family wore yellow. The number pompons on head piece indicate rank. The elaborate makeup made it easier for people way back in the audience to see facial expressions. The high pitch sound of voices and music make it easier for crowds of 1000 or more to hear. The class ends with attendance at a performance. Knowing about a subject such as Cantonese opera leads to understanding and appreciation.
