5 of the world´s top shipwreck dives

dropepiccr For millennia, humanity has been awe of the ocean. It was a source of sustenance, a road for trade and for the discoveries of new worlds, the last frontier. If it's true that life began in the sea, then that does much to explain our ages-long love affair with the ocean. In older times, the sea was also a place of countless dangers, where sea monsters roamed the waters and the abyss awaited those who dared approach the ends of the world. Nowadays, there are many shipwrecks that became…

Diving and snorkelling on São Miguel in the Azores of Portugal

Sitting out here in the Atlantic, the crystalline waters of the Azores are still home to some of the world's richest marine biodiversity, and furthermore feature interesting remnants from mostly Portuguese and Spanish shipwrecks dating back as far as the 16th century (another particularly notable wreck is that of the MV Dori cargo ship, which participated in the the D-Day invasion of Normandy in World War II and sank here in 1964). Particularly great spots include, on the south coast, Amora,…

Diving/snorkeling is Bonaire's number/one draw

Stockvault This of course is Bonaire´s number-one attraction, with an abundance of coral reefs harboring colorful tropical fish as well as giant sea turtles, rays, and octopi. The entire island is surrounded by the Bonaire National Marine Park, with many dozens of sites and dive shops all up and down the coasts (though there are more of them on the west than the east coast, which is windier and rockier).  Even more appealing is that many are accessible from the shore, without having to take a…

  • I can certainly endorse Indonesia as a top dive destination. I went to Manado, Northern Sulawesi in 2007 and dove both Bunaken National Park and the Lembeh Strait. If you like critter diving, it doesn't get much better than this.

  • Indonesia certainly does have some of the best diving and snorkeling in the world. I did a dive trip to Komodo back in May, but half the boat was snorkelers, and they reported seeing most of what we divers saw - turtles, sea snakes, sharks, etc. Komodo has to be one of the best destinations for (light) adventure / nature junkies, but it actually doesn't seem to get that many visitors.

  • As an avid snorkeler and once wanna-be marine biologist, I was fascinated by a recent posting on GoNomad.com: Indonesia's Raja Ampat Islands: The Best Snorkeling in the World. Among other things, 75 percent of all coral species are found here, and over 1,000 species of fish. Ah, well, one day...
