Paraguay has a number of fine eco-reserves, including Chorovec, Defensores del Chaco, Itaipu, and Ybycuí, but if you have to choose one, it would probably be Mbaracayú Forest Nature Reserve, near the town of Ygatimí in the southeast, a 4½-hour drive from Asunción. This 249-acre spread is known for its rich biodiversity and pristine subtropical Atlantic forest habitat, which supports over 400 bird species (including plenty of parrots and toucans, but also the rare bare-throated bellbird and the elusive harpy eagle) and various other wildlife such as tapirs and even jaguars. Visitors can take guided tours on land and water; overnight at jungle lodges or camping sites; and meet local communities who know the forest intimately. This reserve is generally considered the country´s prime eco destination because it offers a more immersive nature experience, unlike the more urbanized or less biodiverse regions.
