Most of downtown was laid out in a grid in the 19th century, but this little neighborhood on a low hill (loma), settled around the beginning of the century, is the exception. Lost in the shuffle of the rest of Asunción´s development, it became a shabby backwater until hipsters and entrepreneurs realized what a gem it was, and since 2013 it´s predictably become quite trendy, with street art, colorful paint jobs, and a growing number bars, restaurants, shops, galleries, and iconic spots like artist Claudia Godí´s 45-step stairway next to La Casa del Mojito, decorated with colorful mosaics (à la Rio de Janeiro´s Selarón Steps). The government has just committed to a big new initiative to "revitalize" the neighborhood yet again, so there´s more to come!
