The National Museum in Belize City

Inaugurated as a prison in 1857 and in operation till 1993, this building was renovated and reopened in 2002 to showcase the history and natural history of this land, going back to three millennia of Mayan history and also with a focus on slavery, British colonialism, and the prison itself. There's also plenty here about Belize's various ethnic groups. If you're looking to go beyond the beaches and adventure travel, this is a great way to get an overview of this country.
