Near the town Širvintos and just 40 minutes from Vilnius, one of the Middle Ages´ most important towns was the capital of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania from 1279 to the late 1310s/early 1320s, and was razed by the Teutonic Order in the late 14th century. What remains today - declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site - consists of a two-square-kilometre site including mounds marking the spots of five hill forts.
