Weddell Island: Wildlife, Wilderness and Wide-Open Spaces
Roughly 16 miles long and 14 miles across at its widest, an hour´s flight away (though routing can add intermediate stops), the archipelago´s third-largest island remains remarkably empty and wild. Weddell offers a quieter, more exploratory experience than the better-known wildlife islands, with gentoo and Magellanic penguins, sea lions, elephant seals and abundant birdlife scattered among sweeping beaches, tussac grass and rugged hills. An unusual bonus is its population of introduced Patagonian foxes, found nowhere else in the Falklands. With few visitors and vast landscapes that often feel entirely your own, Weddell is less about blockbuster colonies than immersion in the archipelago's solitude; two or three nights allow time to properly explore.
