This five-mile-long island, a 40-minute hop from capital Stanley, is one of the best places to start your exploration of the islands outside East Falkland. Elephant seals gather along its shores, sea lions patrol the coast and several species of penguin breed within walking distance. During the breeding season, the confrontations between enormous male elephant seals can be among the most dramatic sights in the islands. Part of the appeal is being able to experience much of this walking rather than from a vehicle. With an overnight stay — preferably two nights — wildlife watching becomes less an excursion than the rhythm of the day, with opportunities to head out in the changing light of morning and evening after day visitors have gone.
