An hour away from capital Stanley by puddle jumper, six-mile-long Carcass Island (pictured here) presents another variation on the wildlife theme. Because rats and other introduced predators never devastated its native bird populations, small land birds remain unusually abundant. Gentoo and Magellanic penguins add the more conspicuous Falklands fauna, while the island's farm settlement provides an appealing glimpse of local rural life. It´s frequently paired with nearby West Point Island, a two-hour boat ride away and also six miles long. Here 1,250-foot-high sea cliffs shelter colonies of black-browed albatrosses and rockhopper penguins. The combination works particularly well because it illustrates how much the Falklands can change over short distances: gentle farmland and sheltered bays give way to dramatic headlands exposed to the full force of the South Atlantic.
