Our recent weekend in Ceuta, the Spanish city in North Africa
Photos by David Paul Appell unless otherwise noted Both my husband and I have always had something of a fascination for oddities of geography, and so Spain´s two cities of Ceuta and Melilla, on the coast of North Africa, had been forever on my bucket list. Since moving to Spain, we ticked Melilla off that list three years ago, and this past spring we finally made it to sister city Ceuta for a two-night visit. Ready for yet more AI? Cities across the globe are turning to it as well as sensors as tools for countering overtourism. But naturally, there´s a dark side: https://www.dw.com/en/cities-turn-to-ai-and-sensors-to-curb-overtou...
I´m a bit disgruntled about this list´s lack of inclusion of Paris - which should be automatically included every year without even a shadow of a question - but somewhat mollified by Lisbon, which has become a bit like our second home lately. Several others had me bemused. Melbourne? Athens? Ho Chi Minh City? https://www.timeout.com/usa/travel/worlds-best-cities-for-food
Here´s a helpful all-in-one look at the host cities for this summer´s FIFA World Cup https://www.lonelyplanet.com/campaigns/world-cup
Most on this list are no surprise - except for Auckland, New Zealand. And I´m shocked that they didn´t include Madrid. Other than that, a worthwhile read: https://www.lonelyplanet.com/articles/most-gay-friendly-cities
I´ve been to almost all on Condé Nast´s Traveler´s readers´ choice list of best cities in Europe, but not yet to number one: Valletta, Malta. In 2026, come hell or high water! https://www.cntraveller.com/gallery/best-cities-in-europe
Before 2025 ends, here´s another best-cities-of-the-year list, this time compiled from a survey of Travel+Leisure readers. Re the top honor, hey, I certainly like San Miguel de Allende quite a lot, but - best city in the whole wide world?? IDK... https://www.travelandleisure.com/worlds-best-awards-2025-cities-wor...
A global development consultancy called Resonance comes out with a list of Europe´s best cities each year, and 2025´s list has few surprises (except maybe Stockholm, at least for me): https://www.worldsbestcities.com/reports/2025-europes-best-cities/
A new ranking of the world´s "friendliest" cities. A few surprises here https://www.businessinsider.com/friendliest-cities-in-the-world-ran...
Hmm, Jakarta? Well, if they say so. And I also wonder about why Hong Kong, Singapore, and Tokyo aren´t on this list. https://www.timeout.com/asia/news/asias-best-cities-for-food-right-...
Good to know, although I would argue including Mexico City is overblown - I´ve been there fairly recently and I think you´re OK unless you venture out to the colonias, neighborhoods where few tourists would bother to venture https://thetravelbible.com/most-risky-cities-for-tourists/
