  • I'm currently traveling in Mexico and have been on the Gulf coast and now in the Yucatan. Opinions seem to concur that the spill won't affect Mexico because the prevailing currents will carry it away from Mexico. I know nothing of currents; just passing on what everyone here is telling me.
  • Sure, it's http://oilspill.skytruth.org/
  • Kristina, trying that site and not getting on -- could you provide the complete URL, with www or http:/ so that it will hyperlink on here? Thanks!
  • Max--I fear you are right and that it's a lot of both--"... nobody knows what they're doing or they're too cheap to do what they should be doing ..."

    In the end, everyone loses.
  • John, you're right -- if and when conditions warrant, Mexico should be added to the mix. Let's hope it doesn't become necessary.
  • Anyone checked out oilspill.skytuth.org? I'm not sure how accurate it is, but it does provide some updates.
  • No updates yet, but would be good to include the Mexico coast of the Gulf.
  • Here are some useful links I've found regarding the Florida coast

I'll post more as I get them.

  • From today's Wall Street Journal re fears in Florida:

"Fallout from the Deepwater Horizon rig explosion on April 20 hasn't been nearly as bad along the shores of northwest Florida as in neighboring Alabama, where large deposits of oil began washing up on local beaches this weekend, sullying shorelines, threatening wildlife and driving away tourists.

But smaller, scattered tar balls have been washing up on Pensacola Beach, about 25 miles east of the Alabama border, for more than a week now. Some surface sheen and mousse-like oil also have entered Pensacola Pass in recent days, threatening local inlets. Louisiana's coast was hit hard last month.

"It's going to be a long, hard summer for us, I'm afraid," said Buck Lee, head of the Escambia County agency that oversees the beach at Pensacola Beach, as he patrolled the eight-mile-stretch of sand Friday.

Many state and local officials in Florida said BP PLC and federal authorities haven't been moving fast enough to protect the shore from the spreading oil, and they fear a repeat of what happened in Louisiana and Alabama. "It's the worst-managed thing I've ever seen," said Mr. Lee of coordination efforts between BP and federal, state and local authorities."

WHY SHOULD I SPEND MY VACATION $$$ ON A GULF COAST BEACH VACATION?

OK, what I'm going to say might make me sound like a jerk, but here goes: Last night I was having a heated discussion with my girlfriend , whose sister was planning to spend a week on the Florida panhandle in August (she'd bought tickets before the BP oil spill) and is now looking into canceling her tickets. My girlfriend thinks her sister should go anyway and show solidarity with the poor folks on the coast, and help them out with her vacation dollars. It's true those poor people need all the…

The Fla Panhandle

I recently visited the FL Panhandle. I was impressed with how everyone kept things going despite the misperceptions on how the oil spill has affected nearby areas. Everything is alive and well from Destin to Panama City.   My first feature from the trip is on YOLO Boarding. Check it out here.   The next feature will discuss the rise of Alys Beach and much more. We will have it all up on Mens Traveler.    beaches.jpg

Road Trip to Apalachicola

I'd like to drive over to Apalachicola from Miami in a few days. It seems to me that the oil spill is not affecting this area (my heart goes out to all the areas affected now or in the future). Can someone provide more information on the current conditions there? Are oysters still being served? Also, any stops that you recommend on my way, or in that area? My interests are: dog friendly, slow food, nature & hiking.
