The western third of Hispaniola island has turbulent and tragic history, including the disastrous situation it finds itself in today. But Haiti still has much to offer visitors, from grade-A rum and beaches to sites like the majestic Citadelle; traditions such as African-derived voudon rituals; and evocative culture from music to painting.

Discovering Haitian cuisine and restaurants

Lëa-Kim Châteauneuf Over the years, through my one trip to Haiti and various visits to Haitian restaurants in the United States (especially here in Chicago, as well as New York City and Miami, like the fantastically colorful but now sadly defunct Tap Tap), I have come to greatly appreciate the cuisine that is a wonderful, soulful fusion of this country´s Indigenous Taíno roots, French colonial history, African traditions, and the creativity of a put upon but resilient people. It´s a cuisine…

11 of the best experiences in Haiti

SPC Gibran Torres Haiti, really? You´re no doubt wondering. Well, yes, the Americas´ most impoverished country has been an abject basket case for many years, and its current tragic vicissitudes with violence and instability make it seem unlikely to recover any time soon. But here´s a reminder of what a fundamentally beautiful country this is, how rich is its history, how vibrant its culture, and how friendly its people – as I can attest when I visited way back in 26 years ago. This, then, is…

Finally, A Comeback for Travel to Haiti?

Because of its tough history, Haiti has for many years been a notoriously tough sell in attracting visitors despite allures that are the equal of most Caribbean destinations. But thanks to factors such as concrete improvements in tourism infrastructure, and unprecedented tourism marketing plans from the Haitian government, and increased interest and engagement from tour operators and airlines, chances are good that 2013 could be the year that... keep reading

  • Here in Spain there´s a Barcelona-based fellow named Joan Torres who runs the blog AgainsttheCompass.com, which specializes in not just off the beaten path but what many of us would think of as dodgy, even dangerous destinations. Their entry on Haiti is comprehensive, taking all the caveats into account, and was just updated two weeks ago. So... https://againstthecompass.com/en/travel-haiti/
  • Now living in Europe, one thing I do miss about Miami is its Haitian cuisine, so reading about these wonderful dishes made me a big hangry lol. But seriously, I also like how it explains about the cuisine generally and also tells a bit of the story behind each dish: https://www.cookunity.com/blog/haitian-food

  • For 40 years, the private resort of Labadee (Labadie) up north near Cap Haïtien - insulated from the poverty and instability of the rest of the country - has been a regular stop for cruise lines. But last April, stops there were paused by Royal Caribbean, and recently came the word that this pause would be extended till at least the end of 2025. Probably beyond, as nobody sees the situation in Haiti getting better anytime soon. Sad. https://www.travelandleisure.com/royal-caribbean-suspends-labadee-2...
  • Well, the international airport has reopened, but there are no flights, and just recently American, which was planning to resume them this winter, dropped that plan for the time being. • Despite all the recent turmoil here, Skift reports that Haiti's tourism board has been pushing a new initiaive to lure visitors with the tagline "Haiti: Live the Experience." • A month ago, the British travel site Wanderlust.co.uk ran a piece called "Discovering the Real Haiti" in which it claims "It seems that, from the (now mostly cleared) rubble, a new Haiti is emerging." Well, we've heard this kind of thing before, but writer Phoebe Smith says that this time evidence includes: "chain hotels are springing up; flights from Latin America are launching, making Haiti a viable add-on to a South or Central American adventure; the diaspora in the USA are beginning to take vacations in the coastal resorts of Côte des Arcadins; and whispers abound of more cruise-ship visits – currently only one boat docks here, and that’s on a local-free private beach."
