The third part of Haiti´s World Heritage “National History Park” gets less attention than the other two in the area, the Citadelle and Sans Souci Palace, but it´s also worth a visit. Like them, the fortified site of Ramiers, ensconced on a small plateau atop Morne Ramiers, was also built as an essential component of the early-independence-era system of defense against recolonization by France under self-proclaimed King Henri Christophe, a key leader of the revolution which won Haiti´s independence in 1804 and who later created a kingdom in the north (1811-1820). What´s visible today is foundations and sections of walls from the residential compound, flanked by a pair of fortified bastions. The views up here are fantastic - especially of the nearby Citadelle.
