Port-au-Prince´s unsinkable Iron Market

Built in 1889 and so called because of its two iron-framed halls, each covering 21,500 square feet, the Marché en Fer (also known as the Marché Hyppolite) hosts 900 vendors selling foodstuffs and prepared food, crafts, and household items. It was destroyed in the 2010 earthquake and severely damaged in a 2018 fire, but was rebuilt each time and is a huge part of the local economy and community, serving as a sorely needed symbol of resilience in the very difficult circumstances of the country today.
