A tribute to my friend, the late travel media icon Arthur Frommer

The legendary U.S. travel journalist and entrepreneur Arthur Frommer passed away November 18 at the age of 95. Born in Virginia and with an early boyhood in a small town in Missouri, Arthur was a lawyer who became a pioneering and great travel journalist, and who will be remembered as having helped open the joys of travel to the masses. While serving in the U.S. Army in Europe in the 1950s, he got the travel bug, came out with a travel guide for servicemen, and followed up in 1957 with…

What do you wear to Seven Magic Mountains?

Seven Magic Mountains is an art installation located in the Nevada desert, and the weather can be quite hot and dry. Therefore, it is recommended to wear comfortable and breathable clothing, such as shorts, t-shirts, and sandals or sneakers. You may also want to bring a hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen to protect yourself from the sun. It's also a good idea to bring a bottle of water to stay hydrated. While there is no strict dress code, it's important to dress appropriately for the weather and…

  • Hello, Johan. Please consider including our adventure travel website, http://www.highonadventure.com in your directory. Take a look. I think it is a great fit and will drive traffic with unusual pieces which incorporate text, pix and video on international adventure locations from a respected stable of journalists.

  • Anyone in New York City on July 26th?  Come meet us up for TRIPup by Triptrotting  (www.triptrotting.com).  Meet up with travelers, locals and travel writers and experts.  http://www.eventbrite.com/event/1813637639  Cheers!
  • And I hope it doesn't lose its characters.
  • LOL!!! Knowing how my dogs are, I'd wager the so-called imbalance of power is in the little guy's favor! But seriously, we've stayed at the Chelsea, and it's just that kind of quirky detail that makes it a grand experience, even if as Terry says the showers are occasionally icky. I just hope it doesn't lose its character with the renovation.
  • Ed,

Do you think you should contact the SPCA about potential unwanted advances against a small dog by a big bellman? There could be an imbalance of power in that relationship. This would be the subject of an Oprah show, except that today is the first day without Her.

  • Gadling question: I'm out of the loop here in Sevilla. Does anyone know if Gadling is still paying writers?
  • Oh yes, that lobby! I wrote a story about the Chelsea a year ago, and it ends with one of the bellmen, a big kissing a resident's little dog. Last month I was walking on West 23rd St., and I saw that same bellman kissing that same dog.
  • Re Ed's comment: Wish there was a Like button I could hit! True, the Chelsea is a mess. I stayed there a while back for a story and couldn't bear to set foot into the shower. But the lobby is just plain special, as is the edifice, and those wide hallways are bigger than some hotel rooms you see. The Empire, a Chertit property, is an extremely uneven hotel but loads better than before it was renovated. Fingers crossed.
  • Two Chicago-area travel shows are looking for more travel media (and other travel professionals to attend next week:
Northbrook and Schaumburg Receptions & Trade Shows.  Register at www.travel-shows.com.

  • New owner for the Chelsea Hotel: Any way we, the press, can get Chetrit to take the Hippocratic Oath ("First, do no harm)?
