A tribute to my friend, the late travel media icon Arthur Frommer

The legendary U.S. travel journalist and entrepreneur Arthur Frommer passed away November 18 at the age of 95. Born in Virginia and with an early boyhood in a small town in Missouri, Arthur was a lawyer who became a pioneering and great travel journalist, and who will be remembered as having helped open the joys of travel to the masses. While serving in the U.S. Army in Europe in the 1950s, he got the travel bug, came out with a travel guide for servicemen, and followed up in 1957 with…

What do you wear to Seven Magic Mountains?

Seven Magic Mountains is an art installation located in the Nevada desert, and the weather can be quite hot and dry. Therefore, it is recommended to wear comfortable and breathable clothing, such as shorts, t-shirts, and sandals or sneakers. You may also want to bring a hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen to protect yourself from the sun. It's also a good idea to bring a bottle of water to stay hydrated. While there is no strict dress code, it's important to dress appropriately for the weather and…

  • We'd certainly love to, Elinor, but it overlaps with London for us, so we had to choose between the two. A New York City event, however, is coming up, so please stay tuned!
  • It might be interesting to have a soiree in NYC next week (similar to London get-together)- at the International Hotel/Motel and Restaurant Show (Javits). Dates: November 8-10, 2009
  • Well, I'm on a plane Saturday. Maybe I'll trick or tear up and down the aisle. It might be a way to get something to eat on the flight.

So without a martini label pin, look for someone short and wrinkled. That'll be me.

  • Tom, Mary Alice, Susan, and others, you've been reading our minds! We're very much hot to trot on the merchandising angle -- and not just lapel pins either. Stay tuned for more developments, and as always, expect something fab! Thank you all for your enthusiasm and votes of confidence!!
  • David, are you listening? There must be a wholesale place that will have unisex martini glass lapel pins, suitable for our sophisticated bunch to place on lapel, jacket, dress (and most have olives, which is a must given the new logo). Do you want to look into it? Perhaps your designers have an idea?
Full disclosure: I already have a cheap rhinestone martini pin with green fake emerald olive which gets comments at gatherings. A more subdued one for ladies and gents can't be hard to find, yes? Let me know.
  • Oh, Mary Alice:
I love it! Wish I were a graphic design whiz! A Traveltini martini glass lapel pin would be discrete, yet distinctive (and better than a secret handshake).
  • Hi Guys:
I won't be in London, but wanted to chime in on how we can recognize one another in whatever gathering we may be in in the future. To wit:

The Traveltini martini glass lapel pin! Subtle, sophisticated, chic. And who knows? Its popularity may give rise to a thriving industry of Traveltini accessories, including -- yes -- Traveltini Writer action figures (accessories like miniature laptops/iPhones/chargers and carry-on bags sold separately).
    What do you think?
  • Oh, don't alter your plans because of me! I just was going by what we did before. I hadn't realized people were staying around for the whole show. I'm working on three assignments and have to get this travel in before the snow (here) flies.

PS - That's also bonfire weekend.
  • OK maybe we can do a meet-up like Alan described on the first day, followed by the reception on the last day. Thanks for the thought!
