You’ve got your flight to Costa Rica booked, your hotel reservations or tour itinerary set. Now what about getting around?

transportationmap-300x199.gif?width=300There are many choices, from in-country flights to renting a car, hopping a local bus or hiring a private shuttle or tour bus complete with bilingual driver. It all depends on how fast you want to get somewhere, how many places you want to visit, what you want to see and, of course, how much money you want to spend.

While Costa Rica is small, comparable in size to West Virg

Despite the wasted potential, Semarang’s old town makes a pleasant, picturesque background for a walk. Garlands of shrubbery grow across chipped walls. The eighteenth-century Protestant church is scrubbed dental white and the former opera house has an unusual wooden ship deck ceiling. Gnarled men perched on rickshaw seats offer pedal-powered rides. The traditional market is paved and tidy, with batik-clad women shucking stinky beans from long, thick pods and wafting tenacious flies from the day’

Among the images conjured by mentioning Brazil are those of beach volleyballers on Ipanema, with green mountain slopes in the background and golden sand running for miles. Aside from the all-night-long beach parties, beach volleyball is one of the country's most popular symbols; it's long been associated with beach volleyball not just because of Brazilians' obession with the sport, but largely because many of the best players in the world are from Brazil.

An early morning flight is definitely not my cup of tea, especially when I have to deal with Terminal 1 at Soekarno-Hatta airport. This “vintage” airport shows its worst face in the morning. On that particular morning when I had to catch a 6 a.m. flight to Kupang was even worse, because there was an electricity failure. A frustratingly long line to the check-in foyer and more chaos at the check-in counter only made me more determined to escape this city. But, at least this situation saved me fro

Culture abounds in Selayar.  The little seaside village of  Kayu Panda is home to the sea gypsies. If you are lucky, and the season is right, you will get the chance to meet the Bajo.

What I love about being on the Rungan River, Central Kalimantan is that you get to experience the river, the Dayak culture and the orangutans, with no other tourists around.

Gaye and Lorna, the Australian and English owners of the Rahai’i Pangun cruise boat, are the only tourist boat operators on the river.  To view the orangutans, small canoes take you to visit three different islands dotted along the river.  These islands act as orangutan schools.

One cannot ignore the tsunami when talking about Aceh province. The country’s westernmost province was decimated by a magnitude 8.9 quake followed by a destructive tsunami in December 2004. Hundreds of thousands of Aceh people were killed in one of the most devastating natural disasters in history. Most parts of the province were shattered.

When I visited Banda Aceh for the first time in August 2012, I was stunned by how the city had developed over the past few years. I still got a sense of mis
