San Francisco State of Mind

As I sit here in my condo in the warm weather of Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, sometimes I forget how blessed I am. Born on perhaps, as many will attest to, the most beautiful island in the world, Santorini, then to have my parents move to San Francisco when I was 4 years old, I feel very fortunate. I have spent a lifetime roaming the streets of this world-class city. Contemplating my return to the city this weekend to watch the 49ers with my fellow locals, I just learned that San Francisco received

Railways changes tourists' look to attract

Travel firms have decided to spend big money to upgrade railroads in an effort to persuade more people to travel by railways.

Despite the great advantages, railway tourism has never attracted medium and high income travelers because of the inconvenience they may experience when going by train.

According to Vu Dinh Rau, Head of the Hanoi Railway Station, it served 200,000 passengers on 2012 Tet days in total. The Hanoi station receives 7,000-8,000 passengers who travel on the routes to HCM City, V

How To Pay For Travel If You're Poor

I know a lot of financial experts say to skip travel if you're poor.I totally disagree with that.Travel can open the door to business ideas and jobs.It also acts as a strong motivation to make more money. The very planning and saving for trips can lead to different opportunities. If you have kids, travel opens their eyes to careers they haven't thought of and colleges they might like to attend in the future. On top of all that, planning of trips brings happiness and of course travel is educational

It’s horrible, of course, the war currently going on in Mali, the desecration of Sufi shrines in Timbuktu, and the disruption of lives in a place where life doesn’t allow much margin for error.  Maybe the most ironic aspect of it all is that Mali has been able to cast itself so successfully in the last twenty years as the capital of world music, starting with Ali Farka Toure’ and including dozens of regional stars in its roll-call before making Ali’s s

A photo story: Palambak Island

9008749863?profile=originalThe long coastline of Palambak Island is still pristine and beautiful. The islands of Palambak Besar and Palambak Kecil are part of the Banyak Islands on the west of Singkil coast in Aceh. Its isolated location offers solitude for those who seek it. To reach there, you must fly to Medan and continue to Singkil by minivan before crossing the sea to Balai Island using a fishing boat. From there you can get to Palambak by renting a boat. I'D RATHER DATE MY COUCH

  Everyone wants to make plans.

“Come over for dinner.”
“Let’s go for a drink.”
“Let’s go to that new restaurant where your meal is served on a piece of newspaper and they attach a GPS to your wrist so when your table is ready, they can find you and you can find your table.”
“Want to catch a movie?”
“Coffee, yeah let’s go for coffee.”
You know what?
I don’t think so.
As a matter of fact, I am presently hibernating from a cold MONTREAL winter and frankly…

I’D RATHER DATE MY COUCH.

We reported frequently in New Media Travel that hotels notoriously use photos of empty swimming pools, restaurants and rooms in their marketing material for fear of offending potential customers. Their thinking is that couples without children, for example, will be discouraged by pictures with children in them, while families may be be turned off by photos  featuring adults.

Enter Socialgraphics which claims the days of travel marketers having only the basic customer information they ask for, a

Cloud Forest Calls in Costa Rica

By Shannon Farley

Just outside San Jose, Costa Rica is one of my favorite cloud forests. Drive an hour-and-a-half out of the Capital-metropolitan area and you’re in another world – a world of rolling green hills, black and white and brown dairy cows, rich rust red earth, plants with giant leaves, dripping ferns and shifting mist. It reminds me of England, with a decidedly tropical twist.

Mesmerizing panoramas of limestone karsts often covered with lush green vegetation. Adding to this backdrop was the ever present fishermen who live on these waters. We were never completely alone.
