Traveling Your Conscience

I promise not to step up on a soapbox here, but, if you're a traveler or travel professional, I've been wondering how you handle traveling to places that have political or policy environments that go against your conscience. Brutal political regimes where human rights are a rare commodity are perhaps the most obvious examples, but what about states, provinces, etc. in your own country that have enacted laws or policies that go against your values. For example, I suspect many of you who are readin

Today they're helping promote us at Uncle Sam's New York and it's an amazing deal at $35 for two drinks and two entries into manhattan's most exclusive nightclubs. It's usually a $75 ticket, so over 50% off just today.Check it out:http://bit.ly/5SBYGs

Living the dream Italy Vacation.....

Relais La SuveraLa Suvera was a dream. The hotel goes back to the High Middle Ages as the Castle of the County of Siena ruled by the legendary Countess Ava Matilde dé Franzesi, a relation of the King of France Clovis, also known as the Queen of Montemaggio. It is therefore likely that the ancient name La Suvera derives from the French "Souveraine", meaning Sovereign. The hotel, which is part of a museum, has grounds and gardens that are remarkable. To describe them is much to difficult to capture

Paint those Planes! An airline industry suggestion

With airline revenue dropping and the industry in a tizzy about staying in the air, airlines have tacked on all kinds of additional passenger fees to maintain profitability. Most carriers today charge you extra for luggage, express check-in, headphones, movies, legroom, internet service, pillows, blankets, not to mention food and alcohol. What used to be a pleasant experience has become, for many, drudgery. Except for a few “fun” airlines, such as Virgin America and Southwest, the experience - a

Sicily Seven

Wednesday, November 4, 2009

And we're off! Leaving for Sicily in two days! It's a trip that we've been planning for a year. We're all going: Joyce, Rosie, Susan, Debbie, Donna, Cathy and Mummy! Someone will be bringing a laptop so I'm hoping to be blogging from beautiful downtown Taormina, Sicily. We are planning to visit the birthplace of Mom's mother and father, Trecastagni, too, a town not too far from smoldering Mt. Etna. Assuming we survive the next eruption, there'll be more next week.

When I spent several hours visiting Oasis of the Seas last week, I certainly shared the sense of being overwhelmed, described by fellow Tripatini member Marcia Levin in her recent post here. Yep, I do have to hand it to the designers — in spite of this 20-story behemoth’s mammoth size and complexity, it’s indeed surprisingly easy to navigate and classier in many of its features than I expected — the crushed-velvet furnishings in the Dazzles nightclub, the elegant design of the peac

Words almost fail. I’ve been covering the cruise industry for many years, but I can tell you right now that experiencing the beauty, sophisticated design, and of course sheer size of Royal Caribbean’s newest, largest and definitely most impressive cruise ship will forever be one of my bigger “wow” travel moments.

Yesterday I got off a two-day introductory cruise on the Oasis of the Seas, blown away not just by bells and whistles not long ago undreamed of, but also impr

Does The Desk Make The Concierge?

A little less than a year ago, Rocio Martinez Quintal—the Mexico Boutique Hotels’ concierge—lost her hard-earned Clefs d’Ors (Golden Keys) because her job description no longer fit the traditional association’s definition of what it means to be a concierge. She was told that because she does not actually sit at a desk inside a hotel and face travelers, she is not a true concierge. This was a blow to Rocio: she had spent two years preparing for this prestigious recognition and felt she had not cha
