Known for its ornate, golden-sandstone architecture of the Renaissance era as well as one of the world's oldest universities, the Castilian city of Salamanca is a delightful fount of a million details and delights for the visitor, as I discovered on a recent visit.

On my first day, my local friend Carolina took me to the cathedral, where she showed me the figure of a 'monkey eating an ice cream' among the carvings around the door. It didn't look like a monkey, though ... more like a chimera d

Here's Looking at You, Casablanca

I must remember this: My first encounter with Morocco‘s largest city (pop. 3.6 million) was, perhaps like that of many, not in Technicolour but in dramatic black and white – the Michael Curtiz movie classic produced by the Warner Brothers studio. It was the wartime Casablancainhabited by Rick and Ilsa (aka Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman),  along with Victor Laszlo, agent Renault, and Sam the piano player. As time went by, I also dis

When even wine connoisseurs think of Latin America and the fruit of the vine, Argentina and Chile of course immediately spring to mind. But to their east, in Brazil’s southernmost state of Rio Grande do Sul, lies a slightly smaller and lesser known, yet steadily rising wine country I had the pleasure to visit recently. I was delighted to discover gorgeous rolling countryside and temperate climate which reminded me of Tuscany and Napa Valley, and a

Cruising Germany's Elbe River

9009219468?profile=original

Booking a stateroom for an Elbe River cruise excursion during a colorful October in Germany made my seasonal travels a complete success.  The Elbe River extends through a part of Germany that I had yet to explore with Viking River Cruises. I'd previously done the Rhine and Rhone Rivers with Viking and enjoyed the included excursions. This travel mode allows for seeing a wonderful part of the world at river barge speed, with interesting stops, and in cruising elegance.
