The capital of the United States may not be among the first places you´d imagine when looking to travel for Christmas. But it, too, is decked out in twinkling lights and holiday finery, combined with its amazing cultural richness, seasonal events, and human scale (no skyscrapers here!). Despite the sometimes toxic politics taking place here, DC is actually a very cosy, welcoming city - and a great place to spend the holidays.

Lights, Trees, and Markets

One of DC´s holiday highlights is the National Christmas Tree on a square called the Elipse, near the White House. lit usually during the first week of December. This majestic tree, illuminated with thousands of lights, is surrounded by smaller trees decorated by each state and territory in the country, creating a unique visual spectacle. In addition, the lighting of the tree is celebrated with a special ceremony that includes musical performances by renowned artists, official speeches and a festive atmosphere that attracts people from all over. The surrounding streets are also illuminated with sparkling decorations, creating an unforgettable stroll.

There are also a number of holiday markets offering unique crafts, gifts, and edible treats. One of the most popular is the open-air Downtown Holiday Market, located in the heart of the city between 8th and F Streets NW. It features more than 70 booths where you can find everything from handcrafted jewelry to artwork and gourmet goods. Local artisans offer unique pieces ranging from scented candles to handmade Christmas ornaments. As you browse the booths, you'll enjoy live music from traditional Christmas carols to jazz. There are also international food options like German pretzels, Mexican tamales, and French sweets that will tickle your palate. Don't forget to try treats like eggnog and the famous hand-decorated gingerbread cookies.

Holiday on Ice

Nothing says “winter” like outdoor ice skating outdoors, and here  In Washington, you can do so at iconic spots like the National Gallery of Art Sculpture Garden´s ice rink on the National Mall. This charming little spot lets you glide across the ice surrounded by stunning art and sculptures, with views of landmarks like the Capitol and the Washington Monument. Plus the rink hosts special events during the holidays, like themed nights and beginner workshops, making it an ideal activity for the whole family. There´s also a nearby café where you can warm up with a hot chocolate, cappuccino, and sample traditional desserts while taking in the winter views.

Dining with a Yuletide Twist

DC has become quite the international foodie haven. And holiday fare includes traditional turkey dinners with stuffing and cranberry sauce to innovative takes on classic dishes. Visit iconic restaurants like Founding Farmers for comfort food using local and seasonal ingredients. In Georgetown, cafés  decorated with holiday lights offer signature desserts like reindeer cupcakes, spiced apple and pumpkin pies, and Christmas-themed doughnuts. Additionally, many cafes and bars offer hot drinks like hot toddy (a blend of whiskey, honey, lemon and spices), traditional hot cider or classic hot chocolate with marshmallows. For craft beer lovers, several local breweries release special winter editions with flavors like cinnamon and clove.

Museums and Culture

And while you´re here you´ll definitely want to take advantage of the superlative menu of museums such as the Smithsonian Institution, which includes gems like the National Museum of Natural History, the National Air and Space Museum, the Hirshhorn modern art museum, and the National Portrait Gallery. During the holiday season many museums host special activities, such as winter-themed exhibits, workshops for children, and concerts by local choirs. At the National Museum of American History, for example, trees decorated with historical motifs are displayed and classic Christmas story readings are held. Meanwhile, at the Kennedy Center you can enjoy classic works like The Nutcracker, performed by the Washington Ballet, as well as gospel and jazz concerts that add a unique touch to the season.
