Found especially in Morocco´s big Imperial cities, riads are stately traditional Moroccan townhouses of aristocrats and wealthy merchants, with two or more stories around an interior garden courtyad, open to the sky and centred on a fountain, with exquisite tilework throughout and rooms with interior courtyard views instead of outward into the city.
A number of riads in Marrakech, Rabat, and Fez have been restored and turned into relatively small boutique hotels and/or restaurants, providing an abundance of natural light as well as a welcome refuge from the heat in the sweltering Moroccan summers. Many also have modern amenities (and a few even with swimming pools!) and each of their rooms with its own personality and décor. Since many are located deep within the medinas (old quarters), they are often more challenging to find that regular hotels, but often staff will be sent to meet you at a pickup point and guide you to their riad. It should be noted, too, that some of the more elaborate riads will be more expensive than regular tourist hotels - but for many, splurging a bit in this area is well worth it, to be soaked in the ambiance of classical Morocco.
The ancient city of Fez, founded in the 9th century, is especially rich in these atmospheric accommodations, and so here is a choice selection of its best riads (Just be sure to book as early as possible, because of their small size and growing popularity!)
Al Pacha
Al Pacha is the most stunning riad in all of Fes and comes in last on our list. This riad is perfect for those on a tighter budget because it offers excellent service at a reasonable price. Despite this, the riad features a hammam, tastefully furnished rooms, and an attractive outside patio.
Dar Bensouda
The Riad Dar Bensouda has a tranquil and inviting ambience. It has the construction and decoration in the "pure" and traditional Moroccan style, which features a combination of earthy tones and blues. By the way, the Arabic word dar means "home" and is used as a name for several riads.
Dar Borj
Maintaining its traditional appearance, Dar Borj has also undergone modern renovations to remain faithful to the original design of the riad. Indulge in a hearty breakfast at Dar Borj, where you may get homemade versions of numerous local dishes. At Dar Borj, you may savour your meals while gazing out over the medina from a picturesque terrace adorned with wrought iron.
We are confident you will adore the Karawan because it is a beautiful animal. Despite the recent renovations, it has managed to retain its allure. Among the many reasons Karawan was considered for this list is the excellent hammam available to all riad guests. A relaxing soak in a hot bath is the perfect way to unwind after a day of sightseeing. A terrace offering a stunning panorama of Fes's ancient city is also available at the Karawan.
Palais Bahia
This riad is a palace in every sense of the word. The central patio features a lovely fountain with exquisite tiling, typical of most riads. In particular, the staff at the Palais Bahia goes out of their way to ensure that guests are comfortable and treated like kings. Well, shuttle will be waiting for you at the airport to whisk you away to the riad. Also, feel free to dip in the little pool below whenever you need to unwind. Great rooms with spacious layouts, plush beds, and tasteful furnishings are also available at the riad. Despite all the high-quality amenities, the nightly rate at Palais Bahia is still reasonable.
