In the south of the country near the city of Nasiriyah, four hours south of Baghdad, this Sumerian city is amazingly ancient - dating back to around 3800 BCE - and the ziggurat was part of a temple complex that was also an administrative center and shrine to the city's patron deity, the moon god Nanna. Amazingly, it's not yet a UNESCO World Heritage Site, though it is certainly on the "tentative" list.
