Founded as a gold-mining camp in 1880, the now capital of Alaska (pop. around 32,300) had a population of Tlingit who had converted to Russian Orthodoxy (Russia had a colony in Alaska from 1799 to 1867, when it sold the territory to the U.S.). In the early 1890s they and local Serbian miners built this octagonal church, which includes an iconostasis sent from Russia, and it remains a working church to this day as well as open to visitors.
