The Khumbu Glacier is a glacier located in the Solu Khumbu region of northeastern Nepal, near Mount Everest. You can step on this while you are on the Everest base camp trek, high passes trek, and Everest base camp Gokyo Lakes trek. The helicopter flies over here after or before Kalapatthar landing during the helicopter tour to the Everest base camp.
The Khumbu Glacier is approximately 17 kilometers long and 1.5 kilometers wide. It starts at an elevation of about 7,600 meters (25,000 feet) on the southern slopes of Mount Everest and flows down into the valley below. The glacier is fed by ice and snow from the surrounding peaks, including Everest, Lhotse, and Nuptse.
The Khumbu Glacier has been retreating over the past few decades, like many other glaciers in the Himalayas, due to global warming and other factors. This has resulted in a loss of ice mass and changes to the local environment, including changes to water availability and increased risk of glacial lake outburst floods (GLOFs).
