Founded by the French in 1746, who ruled for around a half century before St. Lucia became a British colony, this town has a lot to offer visitors, including plenty of shops, restaurants and lodging but also access to St. Lucia's iconic peaks the Pitons; the island's most renowned beach Anse Chastenet; Sulphur Springs, with its fumaroles, hot springs, and mud baths; cocoa plantation Fond Deux Estate; and colonial-era Soufrière estate with its, botanical garden, waterfall, and sulphur baths of its own.
