It's a pair of mission settlements - one of an original 30 in the Río de la Plata basin- founded by the Jesuit order: La Santísima Trinidad de Paraná (pictured here) founded in 1785 and Jesús de Tavarangue 10 kilometers (seven miles) away, established in 1685 and in operation for about 150 years. You can get here from the nearby city of Encarnación, which in turn is a 5½ -hour drive (or 4½ hours by plane) from capital Asunción.
They've been a World Heritage Site for 29 years because they exemplify "a fusion of cultures in which the process of Christianization permitted the indigemous population to retain elements of their traditional culture, and you can get more details here.
