On this island off northern mainland Mozambique, developed by Portuguese traders beginning in the early 16th century, and the Fortaleza de São Sebastião was built at its northern end throughout the second half of that century. Today the island is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and this is the oldest complete fort left in sub-Saharan Africa, and just outside its walls is the oldest European building in the Southern Hermisphere, the Chapel of Nossa Senhora da Baluarte, built in 1522. These days visitors may enter and get an informative guided tours.
