Built into the Bandigara Escarpment, which in places towers up to 1,500 feet - and near the town of Mopti, a two-hour flight and drive from Bamako - this collection of some 30 villages of baked-mud homes and mosques dates back some 600 years but it might as well be a thousand or more. Together with other Dogon villages and sites spreading over various square miles in this area, it's not surprisingly been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
