The astounding archaeological site at Kalambo Falls

Up on the border with Tanzania, there´s a spectacular waterfall that´s one of Africa´s highest at 772 feet. But it´s also home to one of the continents most important archaeological sites, discovered only three years ago: crafted wooden structures thought to be part of a platform by the falls - and dating back a mind-boggling 476,000 years - created by Stone Age hominids who came before Homo sapiens. Other fossils and tools have also been found at the site. It´s not yet a UNESCO World Heritage Site but is on the tentative list.

Visitors can come to view the digs; there´s explanatory signage as well as several small exhibits illuminating the finds and their significance, and guided tours are also available.

It's a long drive from Lusaka - 16 hours (obviously broken up by an overnight along the way), but you can cut it down to just over seven by first flying to the town of Kasama, then driving five to six hours to the falls.
