The Grand Duchy´s single World Heritage Site is its capital´s atmospheric "Old Quarters and Fortifications," dating back to a 10th-century fort (of which only the bastion and some fragments of walls still exist), with the rest largely dating back to the 12th century. Highlights include the 16th-century Grand Ducal Palace (the grand duke´s official residence); the late-Gothic 17th-century Notre-Dame Cathedral; the 13th-to14th-century Dräi Tierm (Three Towers); the early-20th-century Adoplhe Bridge; and the Bock, the promontory where the original castle was built in 963 and built up over the ensuing centuries, including its casemates (a system of passages and galleries), the early-18th-century bridge Pont du Château., and the Chemin de la Corniche, a walking path along its sides with sweeping views of the lower city district known as the Grund, as well as the Alzette Valley.
