The amazing Roman amphitheatre of Bosra, Syria

Located in a city just an hour and a half south of Damascus near the border with Jordan (and which these days is safe to visit), this UNESCO World Heritage Site - now listed as endangered due to effects of the Syrian civil war - is one of the largest ancient Roman amphitheatres in existence. It's three storeys tall, 102 metres across, and holding up to 15,000. The ruins of ancient Bosra - dating back to the pre-Roman Nabataean civilisation which once ruled this area - are also well worth visiting.
