The oldest remaining historical site of Angola's capital was built in 1575 by the Portuguese who explored this coast. In addition to administering Angola's slave traffic to Brazil, São Miguel became the colony's administrative center in 1627, and remained the headquarters for the colonial Portuguese army up until Angola was achieved independence in 1975. These days visitors can roam its ramparts and other spaces as well as visit the Museum of the Armed Forces housed here.
