Built in the 12th century in this ancient city which was the Iberia Peninsula's leading center of Jewry (counting no fewer than ten synagogues and five Talmudic schools), the long deconsecrated, extremely Moorish-flavored 12th-century Santa María La Blanca  (St Mary the White) was turned into a Christian church and is thought to be Europe’s oldest extant onetime synagogue
