No figure shaped fado more than the “Queen of Fado” (1920-1999)). Rising to fame in the 1940s, she transformed the genre from a local tavern music into an international art form. Rodrigues expanded the repertoire, set poems by major Portuguese writers to music, and toured widely across Europe and the Americas. Her powerful voice and dramatic delivery defined the modern sound of fado and inspired generations of singers.
